Mr. Eustace Lane made an explenation to tho Hawke's Bay Land Board to-day of his remark 'about "pickings" . made in his manifesto when he w&s' standing for re-election to the board rcccntly. Ho gave instances in .which inducements had been held out to him to take a certain attitude on matters coming before the board. These he had refused. In making tho statement in question ho had not intended any - reflection 011 any member of the board, Tho explanation was accepted at. to-. day's meeting. RECENT FLOODS IN POVERTY BAY. RECOMMENDATIONS FOR ASSISTANCE. Napier, June 10. . It was reported to the Hawkte's Bay, Land Board to-day that tie recent floods in the Poverty Bay district had done damage to the total amount of £367S oil various settlements, 73 settlers being affected. It was resolved that tho Te Arai settlers who suffered, and one settler on tho Willows Settlement, be recommended to the Minister ' " for assistance to the extent of fifty per cent., and other sufferers to tha extent of twenty-five per cent, of the amount of damage done to their re-' spective holdings.
