AUCKLAND ELECTION.
MR DAVIS'S CANDIDATURE. (By TelecraDh—Press Association.! Christchurch, Juno 10. - Me.'iibers of- the Labour party in >>'hristclmrch seem to have given all their sympathy in the Auckland contest to' Mr. Davis. They all speak of liim in terms of very high praise, saying that in all respects he. is a splen-' did type of man, and is a credit to any cause into which lie may throw his energy. He is known as one of the staunchest Unionists in New Zealand. "You might- find his equal as a Unionist in New Zealand," Mr. G. R. Whitting, a prominent member of the party, said to a reporter, "but you won't find his better. He is a tall, well-built man, one of those' men, in fact,, that you don't meet very often, and 1 am surprised to learn that ho broke down in his speech at Newton. Probably be was nervous. . In any case, platform speaking is, not everything, and Mr. Davis's honesty of purpose and firmness of character count for a great deal."
The "Weekly Herald," tho official organ'"of -Labour, lias'.the following reference to the.rival Labour candidates: —"A' peculiar' position has arisen in connection with the selection.of Mr. G. M'Knight as the Labour'candidate for Auckland East.. After Mr. M'Knight had been olecfed by a majority of votes cast at the meeting of Unionists in th© Choral Hall on May 30, it'was, remem-' bered that in Mr. M'Knight's policy speech as a candidate for Parnell in 1908 he had declared his opposition to the principle of preference to Unionists, which is the most vital plank in a. Labour platform. Mr. M'Knight has not altered his opinion since then, and the result only one that could be expected under the circumstances, and the Labour Party withdrew its suppoit from, Mr. M'Knight, and brought out Mr. George Davis, who hstd received the next highest number of votfes .at the Choral Hall meeting. Mr. M'Knight has refused to rehire, and there are consequenlly- 'two Riclimonds in the field' so far as Labour is concerned—a position that is very much to be regretted."
