The football authorities are continu- ; ing their campaign against rough play. Another prominent player has been dis- ; qualified, while at the Police Court two other players were fined JEIO each for assaults arising out of u match. A movement is afoot to check tho gr'ow- • ing tendency to over-accentuate the im- - portanci! of inter-school sports contests as part of the training given in sscoud- ;" ary schools, and end the bitterness between schools which the multiplication of inter-college contests has created.
"ALL BLACKS" TO BE REINFORCED.
TWO MORE PLAYERS SAIL TO-DAY. In ■ response to a cablegram from Mr. Meredith, manager of the "All Blacks," in which it was requested that two additional players should be sent over to Australia, tho Management Committee of tho N.Z.R.U. decided last night that Mitchell, of Canterbury, and Avery, of Wellington, should leave by to-day's boat for Sydney to strengthen the New Zealand representative team. Although Mr. Meredith did not give any reason in support of tho request, his decision was by no means unexpected by followers of the game. Tie surprise was, indeed, t'ntit steps were not taken to reinforce the team before it took its depai-ture. It was generally regarded that the team had become much weakened as a result of the inability of various players to make tlio trip. But it must he remembered, in addition, that the authorities also were aware that two or three of- the players who were taken were at the time of thendeparture unfit to do themselves full justice on tho field of play. It may be interesting to mention that the Management Committee of the N.Z.R.U. immediately cabled asking for names of players injured and the nature of Uio injuries.' Mo reply had, however, been received up to last night. In some quarters it was thought that in eaa of emergency members of the-Maori, team, might "be drawn upon, but there is every reason to believe that the Native combination have no players whom they could reasonably spare. Little exception will be taken at tho decision to send Avery, of Wellington, to reinforce the forward division. This player has been a prominent figure in local football circles for a number of years. As a wing-forward he has no superior in Wellington—and, perhaps, throughout the Dominion—but he has always been handicapped in consequence of the fact that he has been attached to a comparatively weak team. This year Avery is right at the top of his form, and there were not a few who were surprised to find that he was not included in tho touring team as originally selected. He lias always been noted for his clever footwork—in which department he is. not excelled by any other Rugby player in New Zealand. For Wellington last Friday, against the ."All Blacks," Avery was on h'ls mettle, with the result tha't he quite outclassed his opponent, Evans, who, however, might not have been fully extended. There is every reason to believe that Avery will acquit himself well on' the other side. The decision to send Mitchell, of Canterbury, to strengthen the backs csi;not lie said to have been generally anticipated. This young player rose from third-grade to representative honours last year, but from all accounts he is a brilliant performer. Unless, however, he has special qualifications, it was not fair for him to have been given preference over such well-tried exponents as, for instance, ' Fivenjon, whilst M'Gregor, of Auckland, and Dive, of Taranaki, also had a good claim for selection. Playing on the three-quarter line for Merivale, Mitchell is reported to be' one of tho most promising players that have been turned out in Canterbury for some time. Against Sydenham last Saturday ho gavo a particularly fine display, although not a great many chances came his way. On one occasion, in his own twenty-five,. he .whipped tlie ball from the feet of the Sydenham forwards, aiid, after a brilliant, run, scored. It is ako stated that Mitchell js capable of filling more .than one position with equal ability. TO JOIN THE "ALL BLACKS." (By Telegraph.—Press Association-' Christchurch, June 9. W. Mitchell, the Merivale wing-three-quarter, who-is under orders to go to Sydney, is one of the most promising young players ever turned out in Canterbury. . Last season he graduated from the third-grade to representative football. NEW ZEALAND,RUGBY UNION.
FURTHER ALTERATIONS IN ROLES. A meeting of members of the Management Committe of the N.Z.R.U. wns held last night, Mr. G. Dixon presiding. The following were appointed the Appeal Committee: Messrs. E. Wylie, V. Meredith, J. H. Lynskey, G. C. Fache, and E. O. Hales. The Hawke's Bay Union wrote stating that it intended to send its representative team to Auckland to play for the Ranfurly Shield this season. A further application was received from the Southland Union for the American team to visit their district, but it was decided to reply that time would not permit of such a fixture. The Hawke's Bay Union forwarded a resolution to tho effect that it considered that under the „ present system it was almost impossible for the smaller unions to get representatives into a New Zealand team. If was decided that the letter be received. The Canterbury Union asked that tho following matter should be sent on to' the Appeal Council for a ruling: "In the event of a player being tackled by an opponent, and the ball being put dowii between them and it being picked up by a player on either side before being played by the foot, would the penally bo a scrum or a free kick?" This course was agreed to. The committee decided to inform the Auckland Union that as the proposed Rotorua sub-union was within the boundaries of South Auckland, the Rotorua Union could not affiliate with Auckland Union, but must associate itself with South Auckland. It was decided to agree to a request by the Hawke's Hay Union that the suspension passed on a player named J. Tyler should cease in September, 1910, instead of a year later. The allocation of school grants was agreed upon as follows:—Hawke's Bay, Taranaki, Wnngnnui,. and Southland, .£!) each; Wairarapa, South Canterbury, and South Auckland, £S each; Poverty Bay, Bush District, Manawatu, Horojvhenu'a, Marlborough, Nelson, Buller, and Westport, each. It will be noticed that no grants have been made in respect of the four large unions which it wa.s felt were not in the- samo need for such a grant as the smaller unions. / Cabled advice was reported to have been received from Home that" the English Union had granted permission to the N.Z.R.U. to play' under the following altered rules: (1) Admitting four spells; (2) That, a fair cotch can be claimed by making a. mark and calling out "Mark"; and (.3) For the bnll to be thrown out from touch not less than five yards. "Will we be able to act on the cable?" as'ted a member. The chairman: Oh yes, we don't need to wait until wo receive a further communication. It was resolved that a sub-committee, consistihs; of Messrs. Dixon, Isaacs, and Galbraith bo appointed to draft a circular to each of the unions on the subject; also that the alterations come into force immediately.

LAWN TENNIS. THE FRICTION OVER DAVIS CUP. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) , Christchurch, June 9. At the Tennis ' Association's meeting last ni"ht, Mr. .Wright said that the Christchurch delegates. bad been told that they had no more right to see the minutes and let.ter-book of tho Management Couimitteo than had any man in tho street. This meant that delegates had-, not. even the rights accorded . lo shareholders in a company: The inference was that the committee had something discreditable to covef up. Mr..Gordon said that the committee would look queer if it was shown that tho Australian Association had first suggested Christchurch for tho Davis Cup match. 'The time was ripe for the formation of a South Islnnd Association. It was decided to approach the other associations, with a view to learning ■their opinions on the whole Question, ami to consider further steps to be taken. GERMAN CHALLENGE POSSIBLE. Bj* TMtsraph—Press Association— Copyright Sydney, June 9. There is a possibility of Germany competing in next, year's Davis Cup contest. Baron Von Bissing, who participated in the New South Wales tournament, just completed, intends to do all in his power to induce the German Tennis Association to enter a team for the next cup match. He thinks that Froitzheim and Rahe would ]>e able to make the trip to Australia next year, should Australasia retain tho cup.
BOXING.
TRACY BEATS MUIiI'HY. Details of the contest between Tracy, of Wellington, and Murphy, of Hastings, at Hastings, on Tuesday evening are to hand. Murphy, weighed 9st. lUlli., whilst Tracy was _'lb. lighter. According to the "Hastings Standard," Murphy was very aggressive at the outset, but Tracy responded equally us rigorously. In the second round Murphy showed much anxiety to secure a win early. It soon became evident, however, that he could only win as a result of n chance blow. There were some lively exchange* in the fifth and sixth rounds. Jiy this lime Murphy was being called upon to accept a considerable amount of punishment. Towards the'end of the eighth round Tracy had Murphy at his mercy, and at the conclusion of the round Murphy's seconds threw in the towel. The recent contest between Tracy and Murphy marks the fourth occasion on which 'these exponents of "the noble art" have met. It is also of nolo to mention Hint the battles have all ended in Tracy's favour. On the first occasion, at iStriiiford, only seven rounds were winlesleil; Iliu second meeting, at (Jhrislclmrch, saw eight rounds; in tho third contest, at Hastings, fourteen rounds were iiiiUlw-il; and on the last occasion, at Hastings, this week, only eight rounds were contested. No contest has therefore been fought to a finish. Surely the question of supremacy between the two must be deuuitely settled by this time? Whilst in Hastings this week, Tracy was approached by the Napier Boxing Association, with a view to meeting Gault, of Auckland, next month at Napier. Should the contest eventuate, it should bo very interesting, as Gault-has improved considerably since his appearance- at Wellington some two years ago. Tracy and Gault met last year at Auckland, when Tracy proved tho winner,
Tracy leaves by the Arnhura on Saturday for Weslport, where ho meets "JSarncy', Mullins nt that town on Hie ISth instant.
BOWLS.
THORNDOK CLUIJ'S HErOIi-T. Tho fifleontli annual report of the Thermion Bowling Club, referring to the new (upper) green, says:— Tho dull has reason to congratulate itself on the way this green lias stood I he play upon it durin;; the past season, especially when consideration is taken ox Hie fact that it has ljcc:i laid down only two years, it was us:cl during the Nurtliorn Howling Association's Tournament in January, and some uf the rinks played remarkably well. During the past playing season, top-dressing was continued with good results, and the season's play was concluded on April 30. Since that time more seed- lias been sown, and the topdressing has been continued, and at tho present time the green is in splendid condition. The thanks of the club are due to .Mr. Seaton for taking the levels both on this and on tho lower green during the season. The green has kept its levels remarkably well. In the, previous year's report on the lower green, mention was made of the advisability of re-levclling and sowing it afresh. The green was closed early in Jlareh, and the above work has now been done. From present appearances tho result is gratifying. In connection with tins lmdei'takijij:, the directors decided lo sell the turf which wns being taken off. Thu result has been that when the proceeds from this .source, together with the value of the quantity of soil that was left over, are added together, the work has cost the club nothing. The Match Committee report as under: —Senior Pennants: Some very good games were played, in which the club had the satisfaction of being runners-up. Junior Pennants: It was late in the season before the teams were properly formed, and although not very successful the juniora wore enthusiastic, and only lost by small margins of points. Edwin Feathers: These are held by the club after tlireo contests by the rink, consisting of Messrs. Munro (skip.), Mason, Dixon, and Conliit. ITome-and-home matches were played with all clubs in the centre. Club Competitions: So far as these were concerned, it is a matter of regret that some had to bo abandoned, notably the handicap singles, the same thing occurring the previous season. With to many matches open for competition, it is almost impossible to complete them in a satisfactory' manner, and tho committee suggest a curtailment of these events in the coming season. Tho results of club matches were: Champion Singles (club trophy), won by Mr. It. Shallerass; Champion Pairs (club trophies), won by Messrs. .lackmnn (skip.) and Stevenson; .Junior Singles (trophy presented by .Mr..Mason), won by Mr. W. I. Clark; Beginners' Singles (Irophy presented by Mr. Barraud), won by Mr. B. Lewis; liofo Cup, won by Messrs. Shallcrass (skip.), Ross, Murdoch, and Jolmsoii. Tliorndon Hoses: These were won six tunes by Messrs. Wilson (skip.), Leighlsn, Stubbs, and Cohen. The present, holders are Messrs. Whittle (skip.), I'arata, J. M. lung, and A'imino. The season opened with a membership, of 150, and closed with the total of 151. During the year tho death occurred of Mr. W Wight Smith, an old member of the club. The president of the club presented 1-1 pictures, the work of his own brush, for an urt union, the proceeds to lie devoted to the object of beautifying the grounds. J his was done, and n handsome result obtained, and the work commenced by the Green Committee, A rose pergola has been erected on (he south side up tho upper green, ami numbers of choico roses and other flowering climbers wero planted. The thnnks of the club are. also duo (q Mr. A r . Diuiock for his gift of a quantity of roses. The additional'upkeep of the two greens wns accountable for. ,nu increase in the. wages account of ,E6l !)s. .3d. Amongst the assets the items of property and premises have been written down by ,£226 9s. Id., and the plant and furniture by *20 Is. id. Other items show no material difference from previous year's report. It will be a source of satisfaction to-members' to know that no subscriptions are outstanding, and all accounts have been paid.
,' : ■'• 'PETONE CLUB'S REPORT.■ According to, the fourteenth annual report of the Tetone Bowling Club, last year was marked by continued progress. ■The credit balnnce was now ,Cs(i, as against .011 at the beginning of the year, and surplus of assets over liabilities .KIOB os against X2GI twelve months ago. There wore seventeen new members last year making a iotal of thirty-seven for'■■tho past two years. Jt was'now imperative that there should W allimil lo (lie membership. A marked improvement in. the individual play of members had resulted in the club securing ii higher position in wuior pennnnt nnd cup matches ; than hitherto. This, ■ combined with the play of soma promisinu' juniors, who would join (lie ranks of tho seniors next season, augured well for tho future success of the club. By their patronage members had shown that the new refreshment room adjoining the dressing-room was just'what was wanted. The thanks of tho club are returned 1.0 Messrs. Cartel', XJdv, Coles, Palmer, Henry, nnd Mnrsden for donations covering the whole cost of the club prize trophies; to .Mr. \V. G.
