Millar, Minister fof : Marine, was asked to-day. what ,he thought of the proposal brought before the Harbour Board by Mr. J. K. Kneen for the establishment of a Superintendent of Harbours. The Minister replied that ho thought, the suggestion rather a good . one. The officer in question might be appointed by the Marine Department in conjunction'"with the Public Works Department, and so have a supervising power in regard to works as .well .as navigation. It. would .be too expensive an undertaking to appoint such an officer for each port, but an officer of the kind for the whole Dominion might be a wise suggestion. THE PARNELL TUNNEL, MINISTER'TDNSYMPATHETIC. . Auckland, June 9. Ten Auckland business men' chosen fa go into the question of the , duplication of the Parriell tunnel waited on the Minister for.Railways to-day. ' Mr. Millar said he was quite satisfied with the personnel of the commission. , He had gone into the matter carefully, \ and had come to the conclusion that duplication of tho tunnel was unnecessary for ten' or fifteen years. Tho Department could run 240 trains daily without duplication, which would cost i£3s,ooo_or ,£40,000, while there were much more important railway works in the Auckland district calling for large expenditure. " TEACHERS' RESIDENCES. Christchurch, June 9. ■ Of thirty-three teachers' residences in, the North Canterbury education dis. I Irict which were built within the past - twenty ' years, and which a"re deficient either in respect to bathroom, washhouse, or scullery, twenty-three are eon' necied with small schools for' which the statutory allowance for teachers' house is ,£!5 per annum. In the other ten cases the deficiency in almost every instance is the absence of a bathroom, and it is contended (in connection with the Education Department's circular to the Education Board dealing with the providing of bathroom?) that as the water supply is chiefly derived from tanks, bathrooms would 'be almost useless.
