COMMONWEALTH'S FIGURES FOR LAST YEAR. lij TeleiruDh-Press Association-CoDyrlehi - (Rec. June 0, 10 p.m.) Melbourne, June 9. The Commonwealth Statistician reports that the births in Australia last year totalled 114,071, an average of 26.4 per thousand. With the exception of 1907, when tho birth-rate was 26.55, this is the highest for many years. . ' There were fourteen cases of triplets during the year, and 1128 cases of twins. [As compared with the birth-rate of 2G.4 in the Commonwealth, the last statistics for England and Wales, issued in May, show the lowest birth-rate on record in the Old Country, 2f>.G per thousand. The provisional figures issued in April showed that the birth-rate- in England and Wales was about 1 per cent, lower than in 100S; this is attributed to the bod trade of 1908, which caused a serious diminution in marriage. The England and Wales birth-rate for 190S showed a slight increase over that for 1907, the first increase since 187G-]
