DREDGE FOR LYTTELTON. On April 25, Messrs. Ferguson Bros., of. Port Glasgow, launched the screw hopper dredger Takaka. She has been built lor the Lyttelton. Harbour Hoard and has a capacity of 550 tons per hour. THE'STAR OF CANADA. Steaming without a stoppage from London to Melbourne, the Tyeor liner Star of Canada completed the voyage in 33i days, which, although a highly creditable effort, falls short by about 24 hours of her performance over the same distance when on her maiden trip. The liner, which arrived at Melbourne on May 29, is still under the command of Captain J. JT. Hart. Apart from the sighting of a couple of small icebergs in the comparatively low latitndo of 52d0g., nothing of a remarkable naturo disturbed - the voyage. The steamer is due at Wellington in about a fortnight's time. . ' ' QUEEN OF THE SOUTHERN SEAS. There recently .arrived at Durban the new Castle' liner Balmoral Castle, after a very successful-maiden passage from London. At a luncheon given on board to. celebrate her advent into South African waters one of, the assembled companydubbed her "Queen of the Southern Seas." The title is certainly'rather an extravagant one, but, as far as one knows, is strictly correct,. tho new vessel being, larger than any other' steamer yet introduced to the trades of the Southern Hemisphere. The Balmoral Castle's tonnage' is set down as 13,360 tons register. SUSSEX DUE NEXT TUESDAY. '.. It is expected that tho Fcderal-Houlder-Shire liner Susses will leave Auckland on Saturday nest for Wellington, and reach here on Tuesday morning. On completion , of discharge at .this port, the vessel pro-' cecds with balance of cargo to Lyttelton and Dun'edin. After landing her Duuc-din cargo,' she takes up Homeward loading, and is to call in the order named at Bluff, Waitara, Wanganui, Picton. Wellington, Timaru, and Lyttelton. From the latter port she sails finally for Avonmouth on July 16. Mr._C. Baritrop, 6ccond engineer of tho Alexander, has been promoted to the position of chief cngiueor of the Wavcrloy, in place of Mr. J. W. Brown, who has transferred, to the .Waimea. Mr. Cooper, lata chief engineer of the Waimea, now occupies a similar position on the Alexander.
Yesterday the Government steamer Hineuioa- was at Mangoniii replenishing stores. Continued bad weather has prevented her doing much work at Capo Maria van Diemen, and if:the conditions show provement to-day, she will -postpone the unfinished work until next trip, and proceed down the YVest Coast.
The Union Company's Kaitangnta was fixed, to lt!f,vc . Westport last night with coal for Wellington and "liyttelton, Owini; to delay in the south, the Tyser liner Nerchana will not now reach Wellington until Saturday morning. She will (set away for Gisborno and Napier on Simday morning. The chief lisrhtkceper at Tiritifi, Auckland, on Monday, reported to the Collector or' Customs that the Shearer Rock buoy had draped about 100 ft. north of its proper position. Early this morning the Drayton Grange is due from Waitsra for Homeward loading. . ' • It is announced that the steamer AngloColumbian, 4792 tons, has been chartered to load goneral merchandise at New York for Australian ports, option New Zealand. Recent arrivals at : London include tho New Zealand Shipping Company's ■ chartered steamer Buteshire, which sailed from Wellington on April 11. Mr. B. B. Irwin, chief officer of the Pohorua, left that vessel at Greymouth, and joined the Kaiapoi, now loading for Sydney. The new dredge Pnritutu, belonging to the New Plymouth Harbour Board, which recently left Albany for Wellington, is of the stern-wheel, twin-screw, ■' combined bucket and suction type. In addition to the chain of buckets for lifting stiff clay, she is fitted with a powerful suction pump for raising sand. To enable tho suction gear to deal with hard material, special cutting gear has been fitted to the suction pipe. ■ A trim little steamer named Heina arrived in ilobson's Bay, Melbourne.. Inst week (says an Australian. exchange) from Christiania, Norway, having been : purchased by the Melbourne Steamship Company, Ltd., for their trade on the northwest coast of Australia. The Heina, which was built in Norway, is to be renamed Kurnapli beroro undertaking her new duties. She is a steel vessel of 434 tons register, having a length of 166 ft. by a width of 26ft. 2in.
