PURCHASES FOR WAIKArIAE. Mr. I an Duncan bus purchased the brood mure Humour (chin ot Polymorphous) for the Waikanne Stud. Knmoiir is u.y b'iridsponl from lOlousis, and belongs to one of the most successful ramiiics in Australasia. Polymorphous lias been' a worthy represcntalivc of (lie family during the present, scuson, and it may be mentioned that Flilauay, Miss Mischief; Tenterhook, and To-morrow all belong to tin. samu family as Humour. Another recent purchiiye. for Wniknnmt is Snowslull (Clanraiinld-Siircguurd) willi. Lilly toal by Multilid. Sweet Aitgclus and Vesper Hell lmve also been bought by Mr. .'Duncan. They are both by Multiform rrnm Curfew Bell by Hill of Portland from Wild Hose (Newmarket Handicap, niul sister to Churchill, Newmarket Handicap), by Ncwmiustcr fruui Primrose
(sister in blood to Frailly, dom of Trenton, Havoc, Zalinski, etc.). Six Birkenhead mares liavc also become the property of the proprietor of the Wuiknnao Stud. Their dams are Role (sister to St. Hippo, and dam of Koselln and Sabretache), Lullaby, Aphrodite, The Shrew, Drcadnette, and Spot. Altogether there are a very line lot of mares now at Waikanae. OIYOI SOLD FOR AUSTRALIA. Some few days ago Messrs. 11. F. Ckisliohii and Co.'cabled a local ..sportsman inquiring if the Dunedin Cup winner Oiyoi was lor sale, and as a rcsn.lt of cables that have passed, the horse has been sold for a sum running into four figures, subject to the usual veterinary examination. Oiyoi is intended to race in Australia, and will probably be shipped by the Sydney steamer next week. iVith ordinary fortune, he ought easily to pay his way in the Commonwealth, as his performances in the South Island have been quite high class. Last season his most important win was in the Birthday Handicap at the Dunedin Jockey Club's winter meeting. This season he has won a number of races, including the Dunedin Cup, one mile and a half, in which he carried Ost., and established a timo record for (lie race (2niin. 35sec.), defeating among others Ingoda, Husbandman, and Effort. Ingoda subsequently won the St. I.oger in record.time for Australasia, and she had previously won the C.J.C. Oaks. Oiyoi's other performances included a win in the Gore Cup, with 50st. ■ilb., dead-heat in the Timaru Cup with fist'. 01b., and third in the C.J.C. Great. Autumn Handicap, with ilst. lib. He is by Stepiiiak, from Hermosa. NOTES AND COMMENTS. [Bi Glexcob.l ' Entries for Iho New Zealand Cup close to-morrow night. Wimme'ni's record in hurdle races to date is three starts and as many wins. Vesper Bell (llilltiform-'Curfew Bell), Success (dam of Kilwinning), Two Step (Stepniak—Faraway), and Suowslell (own sister to i'lectfoolj are among the mares booked to visit' Martian this season. Jockey Hark Ityau is very popular in Auckland, and when he won on Doggerbank im Saturday the crowd gave him a great ovation, although his mount was a rank outsider. Messrs. Bright Bros., of Otakl, havo sold Tahi to a Wellington sportsman (writes our Otaki correspondent). From England comes word of the death of A. Giles, a famous ex-jockey. Ho was a contemporary of I'rc.il. . Archei and Chas. Wood, and was generally referred to as "The Farmer.''
Tilson was awarded lOst. 121b.. in the first steeplechase at the Australian Jockey Club's winter'meeting., Uruluax w ;ls t°l>weight with list. 41b. The ex-New Zealand Ataahua has notappeared in public since ho met with an accident, while schooling over hurdles at Aspendnie Park (Victoria) last winter but in the meantime ho has made a recovery; and the son of Mahaki will likely carry silk at the V.A.T.C. meeting at Caiilhefd on June 18, when he is engaged in the Richmond Handicap, run over nine turlonss. Mischief, tho New Zealand-bred colt that, was just beaten by a head in tho Brisbane Two Thousand, ran a gi eat trial at Albion Park the week before the race. He was tried over tho Two Thousand distance,, urnl'run'tho seven furlongs in lmin. tiLiscc, which is easily a record for tho courso. According to .the cables the actual race wa_s run slightly slower. Bezonian, who has now filled out into a very fine thoroughbred, is getting to have every chance to earn distinction at the. stud as his list for this (his second) season is already filling. The defeat 'of Ngapuka in tho York Welter Handican came as a great surprise to-his local supporters, as eleventh hour advice from Auckland made it' appear that the Soult gelding was almost certain to win, and tho inference was that Master Soult might not be a starter. The gallop which the latter had in the Cornwall Handicap must havo caused a marked 'improvement in. him., and Moraghan has apparently got- tho Soult colt back in his best; form.. Kis win with 12st. lib. yesterday proves that he is a great- weight-carrier, and he may be reckoned on as likely to perform woll in next season's big -handicaps. ■
Carbine blood was well to the fore at the meeting of tho Adelaide liacing Club on Saturday, May 28, when three of the six events on the programme were captured by the progeny of his imported son Pistol. Derringer, whose dam is the Viotorian-bred mare Bain Marie, by Frying Pan, won the Maiden Plate; the principal event—the City Handicap—was annexed by Tiercel, whose 'dam, Olga Nethersble. is by Newminsler, from Emmie, by Tiobinson Crusoe; while, the Adelaide Stakes fell to l'irst Shot, whose dam, First -Fleece, is by Carlyon, from 'he New Zealand-bred Golden Fleece, by Stonyhurst, from Golden Crest, by Apremont (imp.).
