HUTT AND PETONE NEWS.

♦ : — ■■ . (From Our Special Correspondent.) The "social" given by members of the Roman Catholic community, and' held in the Petono Drill Hall last evening, was a pronounced success, there being upwards of 80 couples present. Mr. T. M. Wilt'ord, M.P., was among those present. During the evening songs were contributed by.Misses O'Sullivan and Levey, Mrs. Ridge, and Messrs. Twoliill, Crouin, Miller,- M'Ewan, and 'Master Glading. The production of the cantata "Festival of Flowers" by the young ladies and young men of Knox Church, in the Lower kutt Town Hall, last night, was much appreciated by the large audience present. The stage was appropriately decorated, and, with the beautiful dresses of tho principals, made a striking ensemble. The chorus singing of 35 voices was a feature. The cast of characters was as follows-.—Rose, Miss Elsie Corrick; Hollyhock, Miss Mabey; Chrysanthemum, Miss Lees; Lily, Miss Ellen Jensen; Violet, Miss Tressider; Mignonette, Miss Williamson; Buttercup, Miss Flo Waugh. Mr. Edward Lees acted as musical director, and Miss Gardner as pianist. The second portion of tho programme was ■supplied by the members of the ship's couipany of the Kia Ora, tho following contributing: Messrs. J. and E. L. Lees. A. and J. Forbes, F. Tressider, and H. Cottorill.

The Hope of Pctone Lodge of Good Templars met in large numbers for their weekly session in the Ranfuriy Hall, Petono, last evening, Bro. Geo. Price, of Wellington, presided. One new member was initiated aud six proposed for initiation next week. An invitation from tho town clerk, Wellington, to take part in the official reception to tho new Governor was received. A request from the Hutt No-License League to provide a programme and speaker for their next meeting was considered, and it was decided to provide the programme as asked. The remainder of the evening was devoted to harmony, und a vote of thanks to the visitors, Bros. Price and M'Kenzie, and Sister Robert-son was accorded at tho conclusion of the proceedings.
