Bignel!) said the plans ,' were now complete, and had been' de- ■'• posited at the Board's office, all the for- ' malities now being complied with, and ; the next step would be to arrive at arc. agreement with the Borough Council in/ respect to the supply of power. An .. agreement had' been drafted, and was' now in the hands of the board's' sbliei- *" tor, and it would bo forwarded to the council immediately for consideration. ' In another four or five weeks the loan, proposals would be advertised for a' month, and then, a poll would imme- ' diatcly be taken.
Tho Wanganui Borough Council is .' heartily co-operating with the local beautifying" soeiely in tho work of beautify- , ing tho town and its surroundings. Last night it decided to subsidise £ for £ ■ subscriptions of ,£SO put up by tho St John's Branch of tho Society for the Improvement of Virginia_ Lake Reserve, i The council is also considering the inclusion in the current year's estimates' of the sum of .£3OO subsidy to the society to enable tho latter to engage the services of an expert landscape gardener and assistants to supervise the ■' work of beautification, .and maintain the. same when planting is, finished. Tho Minister for Railways will visit Wanganui on Friday, when several local railway matters will be brought before him, ono of which is the lowering/of tho level of the line into the town, in order . that overhead crossings may be put in at Guyton and Ingestro Streets,. both of which arc at present very dan- ■ gerous. Borough Council is considering the matter of ' providing work for those -who need it. Gd., an increase ' of - £49 Gs. over the previous May. Messrs. Eogau and Smith, M.P.'s for. Wanganui and Kangitikei respectively, have just completed a tour of the backblocks, when tbey penetrated districts never before visited by any member of Parliament. They report that fair progress is being made on the various roads, , and the settlers, in spite of very adverse influences, appear to be making a good showing with their holdings.
