LIBERALS AND LORDS.
VETO AND REFORM.
GOVERNMENT AND UNIONISTS MAY CONFER. STATEMENT BY "THE TIMES." Uy Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (liec. Juno 8, 9.# p.m.) London, June 8., With regard to the Government's attitude to the House of Lords' veto, it is stated that the Prime Minister, Mr. Asquilh, is ready to take the initiative towards a private conference with the Unionist leaders. In the event of thero being no conference, or of tho situation not being medificd, Lord Kosehory's resolutions for reform of the Lords still have priority of place in the House of Lords over tho Government's resolutions dealing with the Lords' veto. "The Times," commenting, says: "It is easier for the Government than for the Opposition to take the first step, and if the Government act handsomely and promptly they will be met by Mr. Balfour in the same spirit. Hence, the opening of negotiations, which wo must nil hope will he fruitful, is assured. The official announcement may possibly be delayed for a few days, hut the ice is broken. "The convention ought to Ik small; it ought to consist of principals; the proceedings should be absolutely private; and, fourthly, they should not be fettered beforehand by artificial restrictions."
