The Fire Brigade was called out soon ufter 3 o'clock yesterday morning to an outbreak of fire in a three-roomed cottage in Franklin Avenue, off A'airn Street. Tho building in which the fire occurred was unoccupied, and before the outbreak could be suppressed the cottages on each side had been damaged. The building on one side, occupied by Mr. T. G. Crates, was damaged about the roof and dining-room, and the furniture, etc., also suffered. Tlio building on the windward side of tho fire, occupied by Mr. ,T. T. Lee, was not damaged to any extent. The three houses are owned by Messrs. Dwan Bros., and aro insured in the South British Insurance Office for .£9OO. Thero was no insurance on the contents of Mr. C'rates's house.
A municipal council of 53 members is something unique in the constitution of local bodies. let that is the membership of the Municipal Corporation of Invercargill, according to the Muyor of that city (Mr. W. A. Ott), who was ono of the speakers at the Wellington Accountant Students' Society's annual dinner last, evening. Tin's largo assembly, explained Mr. Ott, was due to the absorption of the outlying suburbs.
Tho annual meeting of the Presbyterian Orphanage and Social Service Association will bo held to-night in St. John's Hall, Dixon Street, at 8 o'clock. Tho itov.
