Our photograph was taken when the rescue parly were endeavouring to discover' the wlicreabonts of the unfortunate man Phillips. It will bo seen from the illustration that a. largo slice o£ tho olift' on ths right-hand side of the picture came clean away. Two men were buried in tho fall; 0110, Wilson, being rescued alive a few hours later; tlio other, Phillips, being killed. His body was not recovered until nearly 30 hours after the accident occurred. It was found near tho spot where the .workmen are lo bo seen standing in the trench at the rear of the police officer. The rescue party worked under difficulties, and in a very-dangerous position. Pieces of the cliff kept falling near them. A workman was stationed on the lon of the cliff—a somewhat perilous post—to give warning to ,his mates working below of any sign of a further large fall of earth occurring; while ' another pluckily clinibed halfway up the face of the siding anil kept watch from that post of ■vantage. As a safeguard against accident, the man' on the top of tho cliff had a rope fastened round his waist, the end })eing secured to a crowbar placed in tho ground well back from the edge. ' . S. C. Smith, Photo (Protected).
