FOR THE SOUTH POLE.
' JAPANESE EXPEDITION. Bj Telegraph—Pres3 Association—CopjrlEbt New York, June 6. The Yokohama correspondent of the "New York Herald" states that Japan, following in the footsteps of Britain, the United States, and Germany, is organising an expedition to the Antarctic. Lieut. Shirafe will be in command. Re will embark in August next, in a 150-ton schooner, with a crew of fifteen. He will use sleighs and Manchnrian ponies. Bases will bo established at King Edward VII Land (east of Victoria Land, where the Britfeh operate) and Evans Bay, and the party will work thence towards the South Pole. •
