PRICE OF TOBACCO.
TO BE INCREASED. The important subject—to many—of the price of tobacco throughout the Dominion is to be determined by a conference of New Zealand tobacconists, which is to meet in .Wellington on July' C. "On certain line 3of tobacco," said a leading member of the trade to a Dominion representative yestet'day, "it will.be necessary to raise the price." Tho conference will be the first gathering of tobacconists from all parts of the Dominion which has taken place in any centre. Its deliberations will not be restricted to the'subject of the price of tobacco. Many other matters, particularly in regard to licenses and Customs duties, will receive atiouThe tobacconists of Wellington, who agreed recently lo form an association to look after the interests of their trade, are taking steps to make their action effective. Yesterday a deputation consisting of Messrs. J. B. Speed, H. W. Armit, and R. Houliisworth wailed on ail the tobacconists of Wellington in turn to obtain their names as members of the new association with a view to registration. The result was that about -15 names were enrolled for membership, leaving only about four tobacconists in Wellington outside the association.
The association itas arranged for a deputation to wait on tho Hon. J. A. Mulatto ask for an amendment in the Shops and Offices Act, providing that any person selling tobacco shall be deemed to ba a 'tobacconist. The association believes that'an amendment to this effect would be in the interests of fair trading.
