BOXING.

SOME LOCAL NOTES. Cooper, an English light-weight,' who has been in New Zealand for some months, is returning Homo in August, but expects to secure a match before he goes, preferably with Tracy. It is reported that P. Kerr, formerly of Wellington, and now of Blenheim, has improved considerably as tho result of bis recent stay at tho."camp" of Summers and Elliptt in Australia. He is. now training hard for his match with White, on the West Coast.

MULL'INS VERSUS TRACY. . B. Mullins, formerly of Melbourne, but now of Wellington, is in active, training for his match with T. Tracy, of Wellington, at Wcstport, on Juno 18; This will ho Mullins's first contest in the Dominion, but he is well known locally, seeing that he conducted classes hero last, season. He is reported to bo clever, but will require to be in the best of. fettle if he wishes to make n good stand against Tracy, who is. invariably trained to tho minute.

NEWTOWN FASTIJIES CLUB. Nothing is moro badly wanted in AVellington than indoor athletic clubs, and, therefore, a new institution, to be called tho'Newtown Pastimes Club, which is to be opened on Wednesday evening, will bo welcomed by athletes. It is to bo condueled by Mr. H. W. Richards, who has already earned for himself in the Dominion a high reputation as a trainer, especially of boxers. Before coming lo Wellington he trained M'Connell, the oxnmnteur champion heavy-weight of Australia on several i occasions. 'Next he was associated with Godfrey, the ex-ama-teur champion feather-weight of New Zealand. It was also Richards who trained Elliott, the clover English featherweight (who is now professional champion in his class in Australia as well as New Zealand), whilst he was in tho Dominion, and accompanied him to the Commonwealth. Another- boxer well known in Wellington who was trained by Richards whilst in the Dominion was Jack Clarke, a professional middle-weight from Home, who is now in Australia. Quite a number of capital items have been arranged for the opening ceremony in connection with the club, which will bo attended by, among, others, a number of members of the local Boxing Association and other sports bodies.
