UNIVERSITY REFORM
Sir—l noticed in an article the other morning, by Professor Hunter on University Reform, what purported to be an answer to those conservatives who consider the standing o£ our university degrees is better fostered by examinations conducted by recognised scholars in Great Britain than by examinations bv our local alumni.
One of his arguments wa3 that thu examinations for the two degrees which are thought much of locally, the Bachelor of Laws and the Associateship of the Otago School of Mines, are conducted by local examiners. In the case of the LL.B. degree, this is not quite correct. The papers for the firs!; two sections ot that degree are set in England, and it is because of the differences between the laws of England and those of New Zealand tluit it is thought necessary to have recognised leaders in the legal profession in New Zealand as examiners for the third section. These persons are not the law lecturers or professors, and have nothing to do with the university or the affiliated colleges except as examiners. Any impartial person can see a vast difference between this course, and the examination of the students' by professors connected with our university colleges. I. think it will also be conceded that we have not outside our colleges a sufficient number of men of the required capacity for conducting examinations for our higher degrees. Even our professors cannot have the ability of the first scholars in Great Britain, for the' remuneration in New Zealand is not great, and there is nothjng to tempt persons of the highest promise to our shores.
■With regard to the, Mining Associateship, all persons will recognise the advantages bur students have of acquiring ■experience 'In New Zealand of mining in all its branches, and also that it is this practical training and not the theoretical work' that, enables the- students from the Otago Mining School to take such a high place in the mining world.—l am, etc., ~,,.., .AN LL.B.
