ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
- o . YOUNG MAN DROWNED IN HUTT RIVER. Shortly after 5 o'clock on Sunday evening a young man named Harold Kitchen was drowned in the Hutt River, about a mile above the Silverstream railway bridge, under sad circumstances. In company with 'another young man, named Flutey, deceased was fording the river, when his companion Flutey suddenly got into difficulties, and struck out for the opposite bank, which he reached after an exhausting effort, as the liver was in flood at the time. Deceased then attempted to retrace his steps, and in doing so, it is surmised, becamo entangled in the belting of his rifle, which he had slung over his shoulder on setting out to ford the river, and by the time Fluety gained a point oi safety Kitchen had disappeared from view, nor could any trace of him be found after a diligent search by nearly a score of neighbours.
Deceased, who was nearly 21 years of age, was a bright, intelligent young man, and under ordinary circumstances a good swimmer. After leaving Wellington College, he joined the shipping staff of Messrs. Johnston and Co. His parents and brothers recide in Carterton, where deceased attended school. Deceased paid them his last visit on Friday (King's Birthday), and set out from Mr. Seagar'a residence, Silverstream,' where he lived, on Sunday afternoon. Deceased was an enthusiastic' member of the College Rifles, and the. rifle which proved bis undoing belonged to the corps. So far all attempts at recovering'tha body have proved futile. David Mlennan, a single man, 2! years of age, who resided with his mother at Wedderburn, was killed on the Otago Central Railway to-day. He leit Dunedin by the 11.40 a.m. train, ami it appears that after leaving Wingatni he sat down on the platform with his legs hanging between two carriages. Shortly afterwards it was reported that a man had fallen off, and. on a search being made deceased was found on the line. Ho was 'unconscious, and had a deep wound on the back of his head, while his left arm was almost severed above the elbow. The train brought him back to Wftigatui', but M'Lcnnan died before medical assistanco could be secured. FOUND DEAD IN BED. Hastings, June 6. James Home, an apoplectic, aged twenty-eight, a single man, was found dead in bed this morning. ' FATALLY KICKED BY HORSE. Gisborne,- June 6. A nmn named Robert Silcock, a station employee at Mr. H. D. Buchanan fl Mangatu property, was killed on bunday, through being kicked, by a horse which he .was leading. Several ,nbs were broken, and he died a few hours after file accident. Deceased was a single mac aged about 45. He is believed to have a brother residing at Nelson. At the inquest to-day a verdict of accidental death was returned. s
