AN EMINENT ETCHER. By Telegraph-Press Association-Copyright London, Juno 2. The death is announced of Sir Francis Seymour Hadon, F.R.C.5.., Founder and president of tho Koyal Society of Painter Etchers; aged 92.

Born in ISIS, Sir Francis Seymour Hailen was a notable link with the pnst. and hns been nn-nrdcil a high pinne in the branch of engraving known as etching. Ho has been described as "ono of th» most varied, prolific, nnd delightful of the etchers of landscape. Between 185S and 1879 lie produced the vast majority of his plates, which have always good draughtsmanship, unity of clfcct, and a personal impression. They show a strong iechng for nature. If. among nearly two hundred subjects, it were necessary to select one or two for peculiar praise, they might probably have to be the 'Breaking up of tho Agamemnon, , tho almost perfect "Water Meadow, , tho masterly presentment of 'Erith Marshes,' and the later dry-point of 'Windmill Hill:' " The. deceased was educated at University College. London, and in the medical schools of Paris and Grenoble. He was honorary surgeon to (he Department- of Science and Art (from ISSI to I8D7), and a member of several French art societies. Sir Win. Brampton Giirdon was descended from a Brampton-Gurdou who led tho Suffolk Hoise at Naseb'y. Deceased was rejected by tho electors at Colchester in 1888, lint represented North Norfolk- as a Liberal from 1899 till last January, when lie did not seek re-elec-tion. Prior to his Parliamentary career, ho was a clerk in the Treasury, by competition, from ISG3 till 1885, and from 18GS till 187-i was private secretary to Mr. Gladstone as Prime Minister. He served on several foreign missions of both Liberal and Conservative Ministries, ono lx>ing at JI. Loon Say's Paris Monetary Commission of 1878. Ho was also a member of the Transvaal Inquiry Commission of 1881, which gave the Transvaal to the Boers subject to British suzerainty; and in later years opposed , Chinese labour in South Africa. As a Liberal M.P. he supported residential voting, disestablishment, of the Church, and unsectnrian Bible-teaching in schools. In 1907 he was made a Privy Councillor in recognition of his e?rvicE« as chairman of the Standing Orders Committee of the House, and the Committee of Selection. He thereafter piloted through the House of Commons, with tho assistance of iho Government, the Bill for legalising marriage wit a deceased wife's sister.
