EMPIRE DAY CELEBRATIONS. I ' • Ashburton, June 3. The postponed Empire Day celebrations were held to-day, when speeches were delivered in the Domain by the Rev. R. E. Davis, M.A., of Dunedin, and Mr. W. Nosworthy, M.P., and the Old Hundredth and National Anthem were sung. Children's sports were held in the afternoon, but: the celebration was shorn of its most attractive features through tho absence of the military forces, and by reason of the mourning on account of the late King's death. It was on a small scale, and but poorly attended as compared with previous years. CLAIM AND COUNTER-CLAIM. Auckland, June 3. Judgment was delivered by Mr. Justice Edwards in the case of the Taupo Totara Company and the Wellington Industrial Development Company v. Lynn and Popplowell, flaxmillers, of Hawke's Bay, a claim for £349 11s. 2d., balance of money alleged to be due, with a counter-claim for £779 13s. 9d. as special damages for alleged breach of contract. Judgment was given for tho plaintiffs for the full amount of the claim, and for defendants on the counter-claim for £675, with costs according to scale in each case.

FOUR YEARS' IMPRISONMENT. Auckland, June 3. The case against Henry James Hansen, charged with attempting to murder his son, Arthur James Hansen, at Ngunguru in April last, was concluded in the Supremo Court this afternoon. After a retirement of an hour and a .quarter, the jury returned with a verdict of not guilty on tho first count, and found him guilty of shooting with intent to do actual bodily harm. Accused was sentenced to four years' imprisonment.

PRISONER JUMPS OFF TRAIN. Gfiristchiirch, June 3. John Trembath, who, at the criminal sittings of the Supreme Court just concluded, was sentenced to IS months for forgery at Christchurch, and two years for horse-stealing at Ashburton, was being brought from Timaru to Cliristchurch by the first express from tho south to-night, when he jumped off the train near Bakaia, and lias not been seen since.
