INVENTIONS OF 1909.

'AEROPLANES, SKATES. AND HATPIN PROTECTORS. Tt" is not surprising to find from tho British report, on palonts last year, that one of the outstanding features of 1009 was tho enormous development in aeronautics, tho number of applications relating to this subject being more than threo times the number received during tho previous year. This is probably due (says the report) to- tho recent public demonstrations of tho practicability of the aeroplane typo of machine, for a great many of tho inventions received are devoted to the perfection of tho balance and control of such machines. The prevalence of accidents duo to (he unguarded points of ladies' hatpins, is no doubt responsible for the great number of attempts that have been made to devise a suitable poiut-protector. The lighter sido of life has by no means liceii neglected; applications relating to games ami sports and to toys show a large advance on last year. In this connection it is interesting to note that tho effect, of tho recent, revival in popularity of roller-skating has been to send up the number of inventions for improvements in skates to a point even higher than was reached in the boom of ..-1875-6. The number of applications for patents last year was 30,003, the number sealed being 15,065. The applications for designs totalled 20,412, tho actual number registered being 25,751, the figures for trado marks being 10,850, and- 6112 respectively. Applications for patents from women, inventors numbered 018, as compared with 572 in 100S, and there were 1509 applications mnde by way of communication froni abroad, of which 731 came from the United States of America, '131 from Germany, 54 from France, 42 from Canada, 30 from Switzerland, and 28 from Auslraia-Hungary. The number of applications made for the revocation of patents worked exclusively or mainly outside tho United Kingdom was 55, but 27 of theso were subsequently abandoned.
