Mr. Matthew Burdon, Viewfield, Balloch, a well-known railway enginedriver, retired recently after having served fifty-one years on the foot-plate. Born at. Larbert, Stirlingshire, he commenced his career on February 16, 1859, on the Scottish Central Railway, amalgamated later with the Caledonian. He afterwards threw in his lot with the ■ North British Railway Company, and has just completed forty-three years as driver with that company; thirty-six years of that time has been spent on the i'orth and Clyde Kiiilway, driving between Balloch and Stirling. Ho had the distinction of driving Queen Victoria from Balloch to Stirling on Soptember 28, 1875, when she was on hot way homo to Balmoral,, after having paid a visit to the Duko of Argyll at Invcraray. Ho liad one narrow esvape from death. In ISI>2, when working as a fireman with tho Scottish Central Railway Company, tho engino and tender parted company nt ono of the points. The tender waa thrown over an onbankmont, nnd Sir. Burdon escaped with his life by. jumping into a wood. Ho had tho pleasure of shaking hands with tho lato W. E. Glacfstono when tho statesman was visiting Alva.
The death is announced of the Row S. J. nortsberg, vicar of Rougham, Norfolk. While walking in his garden he had a paralytic stroke, and expired shortly afterwards. A verdict of death from natural causes was returned at an inquest at Hidmouth on Archdeacon Cecil Frederick .Toseph Bourke, of Buckingham, who dioil suddenly whilst walking up Peak Hill, Sidinouth, in company with Professor Somenscien, of Birmingham University,
