LICENSING MATTERS.
THE OTAKI DISTRICT. The quarterly sitting of the Otaki Licensing Bench was held at the local Courthouse on Wednesday An application of transfer from James Woods (Telegraph Hotel) to Caroline' Preston was considered. Tho chairman stated that the Bench were willing to, renew Mr. Woods's license provided that he would dispose of the business within three .months Ihe application was adjourned' till tho September meeting, but the Bench indicated that Mrs. Preston's application would Be refused. '
Thomas J. Gallichan applied for a renewal of the Albion Hotel (Shannon). ' The chairman pointed out that the police report showed that the applicant had been convicted and fined £5 for supplying liquor to a boy under 16 years. It was, however, believed that v.the liquor had been --supplied by a'friend, and 'not by the licensee; a £5 penalty had also been.imposed on the former. Mr'. Young asked for permission to extinguish the .hotel light at 10 p.m., instead of having to keep it burning all night.- ■ , The Bench pointed out that a light was necessary, if only for the convenience Of travellers and a safeguard to the '.railway- crossing. They .granted the renewal and ordered that a light /be maintained. .-■•,'■ In regard to the' Family. Hotel (Otaki) it was-pointed) out; that the stables were old: and the roof leaking.-' The' licensee pointed out that the stables: were: being attended to, while- Mr. 1\ on behalf of the-owner;■'stated that'the roofing would be repaired. The renewal was granted.. .-.'"-.■■ .' ■-■■'■ '■'. ■ Renewals were-also granted to William M'Kegg (Central), Archibald Hall (Railway), Moorhouse. (Manakau), Bernman (Levin), - Mrs. Uiggins (Wereroa), and the licensees. , of 'the Pahautanui, Paekakariki, Porirua and Manawatu Club Hotels (Shannon).' A wholesale license 'was granted > to' ; Messrs. Hitehingsy Harikins and. Co.' ' John, Johnson,' licensee of the Family Hotel, made application for. a conditional license for the' outside booth at the,Otaki races; .'■'.,•■ ; Constable Esson stated'that the applicant had had'a , 'booth-at the Shannon races'.. •. The police ■ had ! had occasion to warn Kim" ori several occasions. ' Johnson admitted being warned, after which certain men alleged to bo intoxicated were not servqd. They, however, procured liquor, he believed, by sending for.it. Constable. Shaw volunteered evidence and\ stated that Johnson had had the booth at : Waikanae on New Year's , Day. It was not-well conducted, and men the worse ; for liquor were served. Some of these he would havo locked up except for the distance of conveying them to gaol. -If he had anything to do with the district in future he would object to conditional licenses. Johnson, stated that one man was intoxicated when -he arrived, mentioning the man's name. This was the signal for a voice in the audience,' which uttered loudly that it (the voice) was prepared to • swear that,he (the iuterjector) was not intoxicated, and was willing to give evidence. , . ■ . . ■ . The Stipendiary Magistrate remarked that it should bo borne in mind that booths should necessarily be as weil conducted as hotels. In answer to a member of the Bench tho constable stated that Mr. Johnson conducted his hotel well. The license was granted ■-An. application by Mr. Higgins for a conditional license for the inside booth was granted. In answer: to the Bench, Constable. Sntherley stated that the hotels in the district where renewals were granted were conducted satisfactorily.
