Ihe English touring team (says the Sydney Jlormng Herald") turned out for training at the Waverley Oval last Iriday morning, and struck ono as being all that has-been claiiped for them. A practice match, ten men aside, was indulged in, the play being vigorous and idevor, and the men seem to have-got I their land legs quickly. Bartholomew showed great pace and skill, his picking up of the ball while going at his top being exceedingly clever. Lomns's form also impressed thoso present, his clever passing with both feet nnd hands being a revelation. Farrar (three-quarter) is tho kangaroo runner of tho team, his long strides, reminding one very much of Stuntz. Tho forwards, liansdale and Shugars, put in some solid work, nnd tho pace of these two men, taking into .consideration their bulkiness, is an eyeopener. Too much cannot Be said of (Frank Young, the full-back, for he is wonderful. Altogether the form shown in this opening practice leads one to the belief that the New South Wales League bas some tough battles ahead. The tackling of the visitors was very sure and determined. Messrs. J. H. Houghton and J. Clifford, managers of the English team, visited tho Referees' Association, and treated the members to a discourse on the interpretation of the rules of tho Northern Union gome and general principles of refereeing. •

THE WET-DAY DIFFICULTY. The City Council Inst night adopted the following recommendations of the liescrve Committee, dealing with certain sports grounds :— "That permission be gran toil to the Wellington Rugby Football "Union to erect a board for postponement notices, etc., at tlio Courtenav Place reserve, the board to be erected to the satisfaction of the city .engineer. "That sports bodies be informed ■ that tho superintendent of reserves lias been instructed to usa a wider discretion in fnturo in tho matter of postponing games on tho city reserves on Saturdays." An application of the Wellington Contro of tile New Zealand Football Leaguo will bo kept in mind by the City Council, when allocating next year's grounds. Tho Reserves Committee also recommended: "That the Port Nicholson Cycling Club be informed, in reply to their application for the formation of a cycle track at the Duppa Street Park, that the council is not in 'a position at present to carry nut their proposal." Tho Mayor moved to refer this bnck to the committee, with a view to a conference with tho club. Several councillors pointed out that the difficulty was that they'could not make a charge for admission nt Duppa Street. Councillor Luke (chairman or the committee) said they had legal opinion that the council could not make a charge for admission to any jiart of the Town Belt, which is included in Duppa Street Park. He would bo. glad if the Mayor could get. over that difficulty. The clause was referred back. PRESENTATION TO F. MITCHINSON.
