There was a large attendance at the sale and bidding was very keen;the total amount realised being Considering that; it was a cash -sale this is some indication of the amount of cash available for investment in laud in.this district. Three nf the properties were bought by the trustees of Davwl l>ard, one bv A. 11. Collins, and two by \Y. H. Clarl:. A considerable rise in the price of timher is reported locally, operating from June 1. In consequence, of Judge Cooper being detained by press of work at Palmerston, Judge Edwards will conduct the Wanganui Supreme Court; session opening next Tuesday. Good entries have been received for the Wanganui golf tournament to-morrow and Saturday, some of the best players in the North Island being engaged. The annual report of the Women's branch of the Wanganui National " Defence League states that o good year's work has been done by N the two nursing sisters engaged to attend to sick' poor of the town. The receipt's for the year total \£272, and the expenditure was ,£189; while a sum of money is in hand towards the fund for obtaining a Plunket nurse in addition to the two district nurses. As universal defence training, one of the chief objccts for which the branch was formed, has now been attained, the name of the body will now be changed to that' oi' the Wanganui Nursing Association.
