OTAGO WINTER SHOW.
Northern butter -prominent. "Pe has been judging butter in New Zoalaild for the last ten years and he gives the palm for quality to the exhibits placcd before him yesterday"—so writes the "Otago Daily Times" of Mr. Cnddie's verdict on the Dunedin winter show classes. It adds that an outstanding feature of the butter show, in Mr. Cuddie's opinion, was the marked degree of uniformity, which prevailed in ilnvour, body, and texture. No doubt, one of the Teasons for this highly satisfactory state . of affair's—Otago is.essentially an agricultural district—is the fact that a number of the dairy companies have introduced the system of pasteurisation in connection with their butter-making. This method of, butter-making is very rapidly coining into favour, and already over 25 per cent, of the factories in New Zea- ' land have adopted it. There is but' little donb!: that one of the advantages of the Winter Show will be, by reason of the butter now on view, that other factories which hiivo not nlreudy taken up the principle will adopt it, and thus make next year's contest' still keeher. In the opinion of those who have visited the various winter shows in the Dominion, , our contemporary declares, there is complete unanimity that the exhibits at the present.Dunedin show stand out an easy first. Prom the point of view of the juds'j, the most interesting feature of the exhibition was the splendid keeping qualify of the butters placed before him. The aim of flie' producer should be to land his butter on the market in a con- > dition to that similar to the exhibits at the present. show.lf. that is .done, , the butter . need not' fear "competition from any part of the world. In the cheese classes the competition was mainly between South Island factories, but in butter, the northern brands were beaten only by the Taieri and Peninsula Company. The two principal better results were as follow:— Three boxes of factory butter, suitable for-export:—Taieri "and Peninsula Company, 95 points; Taieri and Peninsula Company,-93 points; Taieri and Peninsula Company, 1)5 points; Rangitikei Cooperative (Hulls), 91V points; Levin Cooperative (Levin), 9i~ points; Canterbury / Cental Co-operative (Addington), 931 points; Cheltenham Co-operative (Ltd.), 93 points; Cheltenham Co-operative (Ltd.), ,92$ -points; Taihape Co-operative (Ohutu), 921 points; Whenuakura (Patea), 92i points; Thames Valley Co-operative (Pae- • roa), 92' points; Taieri and Peninsula Company (Oamaru), 92 points. In "butter for grading points" the result was:—Taieri and Peninsula, 94 points; Lepperton (Taraiuiki), 93 points; Bell Block, 93 points; Levin, 93 points; Whenuakura, 921 points; Taihape, 92 points; Canterbury Central, 92 .points; Midhirst (Taranaki), 91i points. ' With the exception of the T. anu P. Company, which again secured, first honours,- the North Island companies were to the fore, Canterbury Central being the only other South Island contestant.. There was goorl competition, njul T. and :P.'s win was a good one. ' . ,
