JOTTINGS FROM WANQANUI.

(By Tolesrraph.—Special GorresDondent.) Wanganui, June 1. Customs duties collected at Wanganui during" the month of May totaled ,£SSIG, as compared with ,£4737 for the same month last year. The vital statistics for May are :— Births, 43 (39 last May); deaths, 17 (20); marriages, 15 (7). For th'e five months just concluded tho births numbered 220 (21fl for .the same period last year); deaths, 78 (87).; marriages, 87 (53). Local business men have decided to observe the King's Birthday as a public holiday. The principal attractions for the day will bo the Taranakl-Wanganui representative football match, and the competition for tho 2nd Wellington Battalion's Challenge Shield. For the latter event teams are coming from Palmerston, ' Feilding, and Marton.

The work of redecking the Town Bridge with jarrah, imported from West Australia, commenced to-day. The timber is described as being of splendid quality, having been graded and certified by a West Australian Government official.

There are further complaints of the prevalence of turnip disease in this district,, some farmers who grow large crops for winter feeding finding the roots completely decayed. The mildness of the season and the absence of frost to clean the ground are ascribed as the cause. One of the "guessing" fraternity, who, on a ralce night last week, entered a fish shop and threw things about and smashed a plate-glass window, and who then decamped lor Wellington, was brought back and made an appearance at the S.M. Court this morning. As he had a bad record the magistrate refused to grant probation or impose a fine, and sentenced , him to one month's imprisonment. Accused was also ordered to pay for the destruction of the window. . . . '
