A -number of comments were made by the Bench as the various applications for renewal were made. Speaking generally, in reference to some of the old houses, Mr. Hase'den, S.M., said the riench would not tolerate some of the houses now in existence but for tno fact that another licensing election would be round In 18 mouthy time. When, the application for a renewal of the liceaso of the National Hotel, on I.ambton Quay, was brought forward, the, chairman remarked that this house was getting rather worn. Referring to tlie Forester's Arms Hotel, in Ghuziiee Street, the chairman intimated that the licensee would need to exercise great care in the conduct of the place. Mr. Tripe, who appeared for the licensee, remarked on tlie difficult neighbourhood in which the placo was situated. The present licensee had only been in possession for two months, and sho had taken over a heritage of misfortune. During the two months 'she had been in the house, however, she had endeavoured to weed out undesirables, and he thought the police would' bear this statement out. He could assure the Bench that the licensee would persevere in her efforts in this direction. . The chairman stated that he was in> clined to think that .lie gave a certificate in this instance under a misapprehension as to the locality. He had been iinilcr . the impression that the house was in Upper Willis, Street. Had he known that it was in the neighbourhood in which it was he doubted if he would have issued the certificate. Mr. Tripe. mentioned that the licensee had two grown-up sons to assist her m the conduct of the house. Referring to the Princess Theatre Hotol/-Tory Street, ' Inspector Ellison stated that the windows were nearly all without sashboards. He had visited the place twice, but nothing hud been, done to it. ..-..".. Mr. Tripe, for the applicant,; remarked that an estimate had. been made of the cost of carrying out the work ordered by the inspector, and his- firm was now holding the money in trust to carry out the work. Ho could assure the Bench that the repair.? would be made.. j Inspector Ellison detailed certain re- | pairs which had been oarricd out at the Prince of Wales Hotel, Tory Street. This was a very old building, but it was now in a fairlv habitable condition. The Bench (jocularly): "Will it last until the next election?" Inspector Ellison: "I think it will last to tlie next election—with care." (Laugt ter.) Wholesale Licenses. The following wholesale licenses were granted :-E. T. Taylor, J. J. Dudgeon, A. Maguire, J.
