HUTT AND PETONE NEWS.
(From Our Special Correspondent.! The annual tea and concert in connection with St. Augustinie's Church, Petone, was held iu tbe Oddfellows' Hall last evening, when about 200 children, and a largo number of adults were present. The crowded audience at tho after concert showed their appreciation of tho excellent programme submitted by local entertainers. A Pierrott entertainment was given by the Hisses D. Brooks and 0. Sherwin," and Messrs. Mason, Bowman and Gray; musical items by the ' Misses. Ivibblewhite, M'lvinnon aud Glading, and Messrs. Ellis, Marsden, Bennett, Hill, Mothes, and Shardlow; and a comedy by Miss DUen- Jensen and Mr. J. Culford Bell. • :
A meeting of the Lower Hutt Fire Brigade was held last evening, Captain Llinn presiding. A letter was received from the United Fire ' Brigades' Association, appealing for assistance for Fireman Sims, of New Plymouth, who had unfortunately lost one of his legs. It was decided to forward a donation of £1 Is. The usual cheque of ill Is. to-, wards the brigade funds was received from the Hutt branch of the Bank of New Zealand. It was decided to hold a card tournament on Wednesday, June 14. Considerable discussion took place iu reference to approaching the borough council with a view to purchasing another hose reel. It was pointed out by several members, that the hose and ladder cart now in use was far too heavy to propel, especially for long distances. Fireman Strand moved that, "The council be asked to procure another hose reel." Secretary Baldwiu moved as an amendment that the- council be asked to erect two more out-stations. The amendment was carried.
The weekly session of the Hope of Petone Lodge of Good Templars was hold in the β-anfuvly Hall, Potone, last evening, when Bro. W. Denby, C.T., presided over a'good attendance of members. Several visitors from the Star of Wellington King's Coronation Lodge were also present. Four new names were proposed for membership. After business the lodge went into harmony and an enjoyable time was spent in parlour games, etc. ' Songs were' given by Sis. R. Millward, Bro. R. Kyle, Bro. Robertson, Sis. Thompson; recitations by Bro. G. Kyle, Bro. Kuslake, Bro. Townsend, and Bro. Denby.
Last evening the Petone Workshops' Fire Brigade entertained the two other local brigades at-a smoke concert. There was a large attendance, Captain Home presiding. The various brigades were toasted, and an excellent musical programme rendered.
