EDUCATION BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. Tho monthly meeting of the Wellington Education Board was held yesterday, there being present: The chairman (Mr. Robert Leo), aud Messrs. Win. Allan, J. G. W. Aitken, J. Kebbell, A. W. Hogg, M.P., A. H. Vile, and W. C. Buchanan, JI.P. Before entering upon the business of the meeting, the board, on the motion of the chairman, placed on record a resolution of sorrow and regrot at tho demise of His Late Majesty King Edward VII, and condolence with the Queen Mother and the Royal Family in their bereaveFINANCES. According to the monthly statement of finances, the debit balance showed a very substantial reduction compared with the amount reported for the previous month, the May debit being JUS ss. 2d., as against a debit balance of ,£1633 19s. 2d. for the month of April. The only account now in debit was the buildings account, debited with JBSU 19s. Id.; credit balances wero shown nu the following accounts:—General account, .£1512 14s. 2d.; teohnical account, £S3 3s. Id.; manual and technicul accouut, JC533 Ss. 2d.; secondary account, .£'! M 17s. !)d.; teachers' salaries, -Etlo 10s. 9d.; deposits, JIG 7. The total authorisations (including sites, etc., authorised in addition to April 30) were set down lit £2iW 11s. Cd. Commenting on the financial position of tho board, the chairman said that the members' would note with satisfaction that th« debit balance had now been, ieduced to a merely nominal fieuro. They must pot be tempted to consider the outlook too rosy, however; since there had to be taken into account a grant of .£IOOO which the board had received fronythe Government for the Eastern Hutt School, and this might have to be disbursed at any tim.. in the near future. Notwithstanding that fact, however, the financial position had very materially improved. TEACHING STAFF. The resignations of the following teachers were accepted:—Mrs. Basak, Tauherinikau; Miss F. M. Chapman, Mangahao; Miss E. M. Mackay, Khandallah; Miss E. Hughes, Eketahnna; Miss }\. Chamberlain, Mikimiki; Miss E. Tosswill, Horokiwi; Mr. A. Brockett, Karon;,Mr. N. Jj. Bunting, Masterton. Leave'of absenc-.i was granted to the following teachers:—Miss C. Finlayson, Newtown, extension of leave till Juno 11; Miss Baird, South Wellington, excision of leave till June 20; Miss Ryder, Newtown, on? week; Mr. King. Ivaiwaiivai; Miss Carter, Brooklyn, one month; Mr. B. n.' Low, Newtown; Miss K. Oaverliill. Hutt, one month from June 3- Miss 11. Page, Nenio, three weeks from June G; Mrs. S. E. M. Smith, Worse] Bay, one week. SCHOOL GRANTS, WORKS, ETC.. In a letter from the Education Department it was stated that'the Government, had made a grant of .£3lB 10s. for the ilakorua School 'district. Tho inspectors were instructed to report upon the merits of a renewed application for the establishment of a school- at Norniandale. In view of the largely increased attendance at the Lower Hutt District High School, the board agreed to tho suggestion of the inspectors that the Education Department should be asked to approve of the substitution of a larger building in wood, as an addition to the school, in place of tho smaller brick structure aheadv authorised, thus obtaining three additional class-rooms instead of two.

On the recommendation of the Financo and Works Committee, grants for works and supplies were authorised for the following schools:—Petone West, Rangitumau, Wadestown, Kaitawa, Elcetahuna, Mauriceville West, Parkyale, Waihakeke, Pongaroa, Reikorangi, Opaki, Nowtown, Training College (Wellington), Greytown, Hastwell, Makara, Puketoi, Taratahi, Belvedere, Ballance, North'land, Dalefield, and Kaiwarra.

' Consideration of applications for work 3 at the following schools was deferred:— Terrace, Newtown, Mangatainoka, and Kongokokako. Masterton. Applications for works and supplies at the following schools- ,were declined:— Akitio. Pukehinau, Lansdowno, Martinborough, and Upper Hutt. It was also resolved, with respect to the following schools:—Tenders—(a) Brooklyn: that application be made for additional allowance with a view to acceptance of lowest tender; (b) printing: that no tender be accepted.

■ Petone West (additional pictures).— That the request be agreed to. Mount Cook (repairs account).—That tbe board pay for material and the comurittei for labour.

Martinborough (Church Acre).—That the vestry be informed that a year's notice is required if church acre is to be resumed.

Masterton.(trust lands offer).—That arrangements be made for erection of fencing. Hutt,—(a) Gates: that the gates already authorised be put up;' (b) increased accommodation: that application be referred to the inspectors.

Cadets (bugle instructor).—That paymerit bo made by the board to the end of June, and that tho commandant be requested to provide payment thereafter. Pouatahi (residence chimney).—That tho clerk of works inspect.. Maranui (funds).—That the statement of tho late chairman be forwarded to the committee.

Training College (rifle range, estimates £M 15s. and Ml 15s.).—That application be made for increased allowance on acA letter was received from the Petone District High School suggesting that certificates of merit, in cookery be awarded to district high scholars who had duly qualified for the same. Applications for the lease and purchase of the school site at Ihuraua were declined. • '■ It 'was agreed to accept the rent offered for the school site at Ballance. With regard to the proposed school site on the Carrington Estate, the owner of which hod declined to grant it without compensation, it was resolved that Mr. Carder be nslced for an indication Oβ to what compensation he expected the board to pay.
