MASTERTON NOTES.
EDUCATIONAL MATTEES, (Prom Our Special OorrespopilenU Masterton, May 31. The Ciirringion Estate, near Carterton, which was recently subdivided for closet settlement, is in need of a school. Unfortunately no provision was made in the cutting up of tho property for .a school site. The County Council has a. gravel reserve of one acre, which it is willing to place at the disposal of the education authorities, but this is regarded as inadequate, and Mr. 'J. Carder is being asked upon .what terms he will sell an additional acre. The teaching staff of the Masterton School i has undergone a considerable change of laie, several of the responsible teachers huviii,? either retired or been transferred. Mr. H. Miller, assistant teacher at Carterton District - High School, has been appointed to succeed Mr. N. ]). Bunting, and Mr. A. P. Murphy, of Pirinoa, has beet appointed to the' other vacant afsistantship.
The Hev. Mr. O'Sullivan, a Roman f-aJhoiic missioned from Egypt, gave.an interesting uddrefs in the Masterten. Town Uall W Monday evening, before a large audience.
'The Martmborough householders have twice refused this year to elect a school committee, giving as their reason the fact that they are granted insufficient funds with which to decently maintain their school. T!\e Education Board will now be compelled lo appoint a commissioner to, administer scholastic affairs in the district. The board has decided to appoint a fresh headmaster at the end of the present year.
The Masterton Trust lands Trustees) who recently gave a lease of (a section oi laud lo the Education Board on condition that it was fenced and improved, will be interested to know that arrangements have been made for the fencing to be procei-ded with at once.
The efforts of Mr. Conneil to float a company in this district to work the day ilaposirs at Maurieeville are not meeting with the prompt success they deserved. It has been suggested that liad the shares been .£SO, instead of J2OO each, they would have gone ofl more rapidly. Merino sheep are not often seen in the Wellington Province. Passengers by the Wellington-Masterton railway, -however, havi; noticed that crossbred merinos are now being tried on the tomev/liat barren, Bimutcka country.
