PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.

Palmerston North, May 31. The Manawatu Ko-Licenso Convention opened a campaign at the Municipal Hall last, night, but the weather proving unpropitious the attendance was not large. Mr. D. W. Low presided ,aud Mr. Bridges, of ,\lastcrlon, and Adjutant Hayivard, of lnvercnrgill, gave vigorous addresses, hearty votes of thanks being accorded these speakers. The Council of the Chamber of Commerce held its monthly meeting last night, there being present Captain Haydon (president) in " the chair, and Messrs. Hard™, Eliott, Collins™, Hcnnett, Wallace, i\ash, and Gardiner. The secretary was instructed to write to the Minister for Kail ways requesting him to forward the information which he had promised the chamber some time ago in regard to the amount of wool that was railed for scouring purposes. Captain Procce's name was added to the deputation which is to wait on the Minister in Wellington, on Thursday next, on the question of cutting up the Native reserves in the borough. Thursday. .Tune IG, was fixed as the day on which the committee will meet the Education Board to consider the matter of forming a new education district for the southern end of Maniuvnlii. The question of. establishing industries in the district was adjourned till the next quarterly meeting. The Rimu Minors' Association wrote. asking for the support of the chamber in securing the amending of the watcr-pDwor regulations. A considerable amount of discussion took place on the question in its relation to elec-tric-power, and it was finally resolved, on the motion of Captain T'rcece, seconded by Mr. Shott. that the C-ovorn-menl lie approached as to tlie feasibility of securiiiK electric power from Lake Waikaremoatia, 1 or any oilier waterways suitable for the (owns of (iisborne, Waiton, Hastings. Napier, Wiiipawa, Pannevirke, Woodville. I'almcrslon, and J'eilding, and that these towns be asked to co-operate in the movement. It was decided to call the attention of the Post-master-General to the great delay in securing telephone communication with Bulls, and to request that n direct line be established. A very interesting lecture, illustrated with lantern pictures, was given in Iho Baptist Church last, night, by the Ttev. .7. Tackle, on the work of the' Church in Tmlia.
