SCHOOL MORAL TEACHING.
SHOULD OUTSIDERS ACTf The request of the Salvation Army ' officers for permission to delivei lectures , on the evils of smoking and gambling in the public schools was referred by an Auckland "Herald" representative on Saturday to the Minister for Education (the Hon. Geo. Fowlds) 'for Ms opinion. The Minister, in reply, said:—"l hold that, almost without exception, the whole of the work within school hours should be done by the teachers, and thai under the head of moral instruction and hygiene the subjects of smoking and gambling should be dealt with by the teachers. Viewed from the standpoint of education I do not think it is desirable as a rule that any outsiders should go into the schools at all during school hours. So far as Bible-reading and religiuus instruction are concerned, my views on this question are well known, namely, that such instruction should ba supplied by representatives of the Chureii outside school hours and in the Sunday schools."
