KING'S BIRTHDAY.
WORK OR HOLIDAY?
j\lr. H. C. Tewsley, president of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, speaking to a Dominion reporter, said that his interpretation of King Gcorgo's wish that his birthday (which fails next Friday) should not be celebrated this year was that his Majesty did not desire any glorification of his birthday at a time like tho present, so soon after tho death of his father, but that need not prevent the business community from showing a proper respect for the King's birthday by closing; their'establishments on that day in accordanco with custom.
Mr. Towsloy, added that that was the view he intended to place before tho Warehousemen's -Association, of which lie is president, at a raecfciug to bo held this morning. Tho association had alroady dccided that the warehouses should be closed on his Majesty's birthday, but in view of later developments tho question would come up for reconsideration.
Mr. W. Grenfell, secretary of the Wellington Warehousemen's Association, stated on Saturday that from inquiries he had inado ho found that a number of leading drapery, grocery, ironmongery, and boofcmaking firms, while not desirous of keeping the holiday, recognised that business would bo dislocated' by award and Factory Act provisions, and had therefore decided to close their establishments next Friday.
