His Exoellency tho Governor, accompanied by Lieutenant-Colonel It. Heaton Rhodes, M.P., will make a tour of the Ellesmero district to-day by motor-car. At 10 a.m. Lord Plunket will reach Lincoln School, Where he will be welcomed by the members of the Lincoln and Springs Road Boards. At 10.30 Selwyu bridge' will be reached, and here the party will meet the Ellesmere Road Board, afterwards going on to Leeston School, whore his Excellency will address the scholars. At Killinchv School, which will be reached at 11.45, an important ceremony will take place,' his Excellency accepting a flag on behalf of Lady Pliuikot for presentation to the Killinchy School, Ireland. Brookside School will be the next in order, and at 12.15 the scholars will be addressed by his Excellency, the party then proceeding on to Sir. G. E. lthodes's residence at Meadowbank, where they will lunch. Afterwards the tour will be continued via Lake Road, tho party arriving at Southbridge School at 2.45, where his Excellency will be welcomed by the Town Board. Should time permit, the return journey to Christchurch will be' made via Tai Tapu.
Sir Joseph Ward passed through Christchurch on Saturday evening on his way from the West Coast to. Wellington. He leaves Wellington again on Monday night in order to attend the Governor's levee in Christchurch on Tuesday.—Press - Association.
. SiT Richard G. Glyn, Bart., has cabled and offered the living of which iie is tho pa.tron in England to the Rev. T. G. Kay, vicar of St. Luke's new church, Wadestown.
The Hon. E. Richardson, C.M.G., who is retiring from the position of manager of the Patent Slip after twenty-one years' service, was, on Saturday, presented by the employees of the company with a handsome tobacoo cabinet. In making the presentation, Mr. Paterson remarked upon the high state of efficiency in which Mr. Richardson ia leaving the Slip, and upon his kindly tact and good judgment in all matters concerning tlio Slip and the company's employees. Mrs. Richardson was also presented with a travelling rug. After Mr. Richardson had replied, the gathering dispersed, three cheers being given for Mr. and Mrs. Richardson.
Mr. G. H. Scales left for England by the Mokoia 011 Friday, proceeding by way of Tahiti and America. His Grace Archbishop Redwood held a confirmation service at Opunake yesterday. He will return to Wellington about the middle of the week. , Dr. C. E. Maude, of Ashburton, haa joined the New Zealand Shipping Company's Tongariro, as surgeon foi the voyage to London. He will be accompanied on the trip Homo by Mrs, Maude. Captain D. A. Hickey, D.5.0., district adjutant in the Otago command, and Lieut. S. G. Saudle, R.N.Z.A. (Canterbury Detachmcnt), will sit .at Wellington to-day for their "C" certificate examination. Mr. Alfred A. Newman, of Messrs. Raphael Tuck and Son, London, is at present staying at the Grand Hotel. Mr. Field, M.P., for Otaki, is at present on a visit to the Bay of Plenty. Messrs. Keith and Norman Kirkcaldie left for Sydney by the Warrimoa 011 Friday last. A Press Association cablegram from London states that the Royal Lifesaving Society -has arranged that Mr. Henry, its secretary, shall visit all the head centres in Australia and 1 New Zealand, give lectures and demonstrations, and hold examinations. He will arrive in Melbourne at the end of Oc-' tuber.
Tho following candidates passed the special law examinations held this month:—J. H. Kane, T. C. Webb, C. H. Barton, N. J. D. Cox, E. S. Grundy, A. M'Carthy, A. M. Salek, F. K. Turnbull, W. H. Walton, and Aliss A. L. Rees. The examination is the final for qualification as solicitor The following, admitted as barristers elsewhere than in New Zealand, have passed the necessary examination in New Zealand statute law to permit of practice in the Dominion:—J. B. Logan and M. H. Godby.
Sir. Thomas Kingston, the wellknown actor; passed through Wellington on Friday last, bound to London, via Sydney. The part of Captain Hook in "Peter Pan" has been assumed by Mr. Maurice Dudley for last few nights of tho season in Christchurch. Tho company will pass through Wellington on its way to Sydney on.Fridaj next. Mr. T. W. Kirk, Government biologist, left for the south by 'the Alararo? on Saturday night. A Dunedin Press Association telegram records the death of Air. Wm. Paterson, J.P., of Ayrburn Station, Arrow, aged 78, one of" the oldest residents in the Lakes district.. A private cable announces the death in Melbourne of Air. H. Oakley Archer, formerly city surveyor,, Christchurch, states a Press Association telegram. Tho death occurred on Saturday of Air. Henry George Burton, of Owen Street, who at one time was a wellknown cricketer in Wellington. The' deceased was a member of the. Phoenix Club for years, and on several occasions in the '90's represented the province, being a very reliable batsman. Aloro recently he acted as secretary of the Wednesday Cricket Association. He was also secretary of the Wellington Chess Club in 1906-7 and was a player of no little skill,' as was evidenced when he tied with Air. Featonby for the first prize in tho South Wellington Club. Air. Burton' was at one time in the employ of Levin and Co., leaving the firm to start in business as a land and commission agent- at. tho Hutt. Later still ho was secretary to the Hospital Trustees for a time. The deceased, who was 46 years of age, leaves a son (Air. H. Burton, also a representative cricketer and a member of ,the Wollington South Club) and a daughter.
Much regret was felt m the Masterton district (says, our local correspondent) when news was received that Mr. William Chisholni, a former resident of Mauriccvillo, had died at Avondale, Auckland. . Dcccasod, who was 76. years of age, was a native of Scotland, and came to tho colonies in the golddigging Jays. For .years ho was manager of Messrs. Cowlishaw and Plaisted's ironmongery business at Hokitika, and afterwards became a storekeeper at Miuiricevillo West. He was a prominent, member in Methodist and temperance circlesj and was als<a Justice of tho Peace.
