NOTES AND COMMENTS.

[Br Gles'coe.] The Hawera-owned Tam Glen is more useful than his early performances would suggest. With- Deeley in the saddle ho was backed by his. owner for the nine-furlong hack race at "Wanganui, and, after making all the running, was only beaten by a neck.

There will ho race meetings at Ellerslie, Oaki, and Dunedin next Friday and Saturday. Tho local trainer, D. Nyhan, took two horses to Plumpton for'tho meeting there on Saturday. Havoc was unplaced in tho principal event, but Nyhan drovo Mr. J. Cheeseman's Dick G. into second placo in a big field in the Tramway Handicap. A reminder is given that acceptances for tho Otaki meeting closo to-night.' . Tho well-known jockey, A. Oliver, has decided to leave Feilding and in future lie will reside at Awapuni, and will be attached to the stable presided over by G. Price. ~ Tho Highden-owneil Aorangi was a little on the pretty side at Wanganui, and his two races there should improvo him. However, it is not suggested that he could possibly improve enough to heat Wimraera. It has been suggested that tho Hastings horse was tiring at the finish of the Wahganni race, but what aro the facts? Thrco furlongs from home, when Andax- tried to run up to him, Cress let his head loose, and Wimroera quickly put a big break on tho Karamu champion. Another point that will be all in the Mcrriwee gelding's favour is that he is comparatively green at jumping, and each race will improve him. Then again, Audax, who ran second to him at Wanganui, will not be opposed to him in the hurdles at Ellerslifc, and it cannot be likely that .i 71b. penalty will bring Wimmera back If) the others. It looks, therefore, as if ho Will only have- to fear somo of the Auckland horsea. >

Nightmare has been well treated in the matter of weight by the Otaki handicapper. At Wanganui she led nearly the whole way on the first day, and only succumbed in the last furlong to Merry Lawn. After this good showing Mr. J. Northcott decided to reserve her for tho hurdle races at the Otaki meeting.

For some time past tho running of Xavier had been of a disappointing order. But the old Tasman gelding showed up well in the May Hurdles at Wanganui, when ho ran a close second. The Trentham-trained animal, who is well down in the weights now, camo with a nice run over tho final quartermile, and got within a length of Playmate.

Excellent acceptances have been received for tho first day's events at tho Dunedin Jockey' Club meeting, and in tho steeplechase tho whole of tho fifteen horses handicapped by Mr. Henrys have paid up. This will bo gratifying to those members of tho committee who agitated for a cross-country event to be placed on the programme, as there was considerable opposition to the proposal. 1

On tho second day of. tho Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting, Penates, lOst. 81b., ivas just beaten in a racc in .which Boanerges', Bst., was unplaced. Since then they have not met, but Boanerges lias won tho four races in which he has competed, and Penates has been several times unplaced. This comparison is not made to indicato that l'enatcs will bo unplaced in tho Raukawa Cup if ho 6tarts, but the problem is how to handicap the pair if they met over a sixfurlongs course to-morrow.

The Lord Rosslvn —Komuri gelding, Stono Ginger, who won two hurdle races at the North Otago J.C. meeting last week, was owned at ono time by Mr. St. J. Buckley, but ho disposed of him for tho modest sum of £16, so he must have proved a rare bargain to Mr. T. Twomey, his present owner. At the Dunedin J.C.'s aucumn meeting in February he finishe'd second in the hurdle races on the first two days, and won on the concluding day, and at tho South Canterbury J.C. s meeting last month ho acted as runner-up in both hurdle races, while now he has annexed the double al Uaniaru; On the score of breeding ho ought to be able to gallop, as his , sire, Lord Rosslyn, who himself was no mean performer on tho turf, is by St. Clair (son of Musket) from Lady Emma, a dual Dunedin Cup winner, while his dam, Komuri, is full sister to Euroclydon, who won the New Zealand Cup, Derby, and Canterbury Cup in 1895, being by Gorton from Lady Gertrude.

Nominations for all events of the Napier Parle Racing Club's winter meeting will closo on Thursday, Jiuie 2, at 8 p.m., with the secretary.
