Tho Arahura, which sailed for Picton and Ixclson yesterday in the Pateona's run. will leave Nelson at 8 a.m. for Wellington direct, so as to bo in time to leave hero at 7 p.m. for Picton, Nelson, Westport, and Greymouth. Mr. Peter Brown, late stevedore of the i\ew Zealand Shipping Co., received word from bis son, Mr. Edward Brown, of hia success in gaining his chief engineer's certiiicate. It is only three years since", the latter left Cable's Foundry for the position of fourth engineer on the s.s. Inveran, and in that short period of time, he has passed all his examinations and ia now second engineer, while only twentyfour years of age-something like a. record lor the Dominion. Three other sons aro lollowmg the same calling, one being a chief engineer at present in the Old Coun- ■ try, and the two others learning their business in Cable's Foundry, in Wellington. It it not often one hears of so manv in the ono family taking up tho same work nor or such early success, and Mr. and Mrs. Brown have good reason to be proud of their sons brilliant beginning. It is always pleasant to hear of the old sea instincts working to such purpose. Captain L. B. The Adelaide Shipping , Company's steamer Echunga will load at Newcastle at the end of the present week for Lyttelton. Her loading on this occasion will conclude her charter with tho Union S.S. Company: Departure of the Fifeshire from Lyttelton for Avonmouth has been fixed for Tuesday morning. On Tuesday, the Drayton Grango is to leave Dunedin for Bluff.
