BIG EIVEE SOUTH (By Telegraph—Press Associations Rcefton, May 27. In the Big River South mine this week the level was extended 13ft. on a solid reef from 18 to 24in. wide. Gold can bo obtained by dish prospects. WAITn G.M. RETURN!;. Auckland, May 27. During the four-weekly period ended May 14 last, the Waihi Gold Mining Company crushed and treated 35,293 tons of ore for a return of bullion of an estimated value of £74.327. This shows an increase, compared with the return for tho provious month, when 30,490 tons yielded bullion estimated to be worth £66,501. The present return shows a slight decrease compared with that of the corresponding period of last year, when 32,649 tons yielded bullion which realised £74.603, though tho estimated value was £73,412. On tho latter basis, therefore, the return now recorded represents an increase. Tho total amount won from the mine to date "is £8,516,798.

Tho Mount Lyell return from April 21 till May 18 (inclusive) shows that 32.192 tons of ore was treated, also 60 tons of purchased ore. MINING COMPANIES FINED. IN RE GAZETTE STATEMENTS ffly Telecraph.-Press Association.! Auckland, May 27. Twenty-three mining secretaries appeared before Mr. E. C. Cnttcn, S.M.. to-day. charged with breaches of Section 368 of tho Companies' Act. The section requires the secretary of every company to prepare a true statement of tho company's affairs for publication in tho Gazette during the month of January. Mr. Mays, who appeared for the prosecution, stated that there was hardly a section of tho Act which had not been neglected by several of the niiniiiK companies, and the secretaries were fortunato in being prosecuted under tho section which provided a minimum fine of only £5 per day of default.
All but one of tlio defendants, whoso case was adjourned, pleaded euiity, and were each fined £5 (with costs £1 Bs.) on tho first information. Is. (with costs, £1 Bs.), on the second, and Is. (with costs, 75.), on each of the other charges. The ainouut of tho fines totalled over £100.
