WELLINGTON ART CLUB.
THE NEW CLUB-HOUSE.
His Worship the Mayoi will formally open tho Wellington Art Club's new club-houso in Bowen Street on Saturday, June 4, at 3 p.m. The premises have received structural alterations to adapt them to the purposes of the club, and a very fine tea-room and social hall has been provided. The internal decorations are of a very artistic character, and special furniture has been designed by one of the members, Mr. Page, of Messrs. Atkin and Bacon, and is being constructed by the Scoullar. Co., Ltd. Particular attention Itas been given to tho lighting,' especially as regards the studio, inverted incandescent burners being generally employed, tho model being illuminated by one of nearly four hundred candle-power. Tho Wellington Gas Company han> been busy witti i.he fittings, which have been obtained from the Australian Manufacturing Company, Sydney. The studio will accommodate about twenty artists. The club is fortunate in being able to hang somo very good works of art. Dr. Hay (one of the vice-presidents) has kindly lent the large picture by Van dor Velden of the Otira Gorge, which was so much admired in the New Zealand Academy two ' years _ ago. A specimen of the late Mr. Gully's best work has also been presontcd by Mrs. Robert Lee, who has also kindly lent the club two other valuable pictures by the same artist. Mr. Wardell and the president have also sent pictures, and a charming water colour by Mario has been presented'by Mr. Blake. Promises of other pictures have been received, and, as tho best work will bo hung in tho tea-room and mil be changed from time to time, a visit to tho tea-room will always prove interesting to artists and their friends.
The first, of a scries of chamber concerts will bo hold in the club rooms on tho opening night. The club. has received a generous donation from Mrs. S. A. Rhodes, who has been elected a life momber. The art union will bo drawn at Messrs. Beadnall'a gallery in Willis Street on Friday, June 10, at 5 p.m. Tickets may bo obtained for a day or two longer from oither Messrs. Beaunail or Butler, and as the face value of the pictures has not yet been reached, there should bo every inducement to tho public to buy.
