PROCEEDINGS HELD DP. Christchurch, May 27. In the Supreme Court this morning. Mr. ltussell, for Bowron Bros, Smith, defendants in ths action, Commissioner of Taxes' v. Bowron said that his clients bad to be ready for the bearing of the appeal against the decision of Mr. H. w. Bishop, S.M., at the first available sitting of the Court after fifteen days. Mr. Stringer, K.C., who had appeared for the Commissioner, was in Wellington, however, and the hearing could not be taken at present. Mr. Justice Sim said the natter could bo mentioned again on June 17. RATINC PUBLIC GROUNDS. Christchurch, May 27. The question of the payment of rates on recreation grounds was raised at a meeting of one Gf the city bowling clubs last night. The matter had frequently been discussed here, but no definite action had been taken in tho matter. Now tho question is to be referred to the Bowling Centre, and the probability is that all sports bodies will be invited to approach the Government with the view of the promotion of legislation to relieve ground\ used purely for recreation from the payment oi rates. ' .- LAW MACHINERY.

Whangarei, May 27. Dr iindlay, Attorney-General, who lectures at Whangarei to-niglit on "Native Land: Its Law and Settlement," stated, in reply to a deputation, that the Lunatics Act will be amended this year. On the question of plaints in connection with the Divorce and Mafaamonial Causes Act, Dr. Findlay said he could see no reason why plaints should not be taken before Justices of- tha Peace, who were doing this work very, well. AN ILL-FITTED SCOW. Auckland, May 27. At the Police Court to-iay, Georgl Henry King, master of the scow Haaturu, was charged with having taker his vessel out of the port of Auckland without having on board proper lifesaving appliances. Captain Fleming, skipping master,, stated that, on Maj 5, defendant left in his scon of 24 tons register—for Waihflke. He had no life-belts on board. The owner* of tho vessel had fitted her with two sets of life-belts during the last 13 months, but, owing to neglect, they, had either been lost or allowed to become useless. The magistrate imposed a fine of £5, with costs 7s. FARMERS' UNION. Christchurch, May 27. The annual conference of the NortS Canterbury Farmers' Union was concluded to-day. The following officera were elected: —President, Mr. 0. I?. Clothier; vice-president, Mr. F. S. Horrell; honorary treasurer, Mr. Wilfred Hall; auditor, Mr. T. H. Caverhill ; delegates to the conference at Wellington, Messrs. E. Evans and F, G, Horrell.

SHEEP-DOG TRIALS. Christchurch, May 27. At the Christchuroh sheep-dog trials to-day H. G. Waters, of Barewood, Central Otago, 'won the first prize oi £25, champion gold medal, and challenge cup in the heading, bringing back, holding in tho ring, and yarding class. H. T. Little's Doon was second, W. X Craig's Fan third, R. R. Pollock's Roll fourth, and A. Turpin's Lady fifth.

PETROLEUM IN PLENTY. New Plymouth, May 27. The Taranaki Petroleum Companj won one hundred barrels of oil tha week (4200 gallons). -No. 2 bore is now down to a depth of 3030 ft., and this casing is 12ft. from the bottom. During the week the No. 2 bore yielded 80 barrels of oil, and Nos. 1 and 3 Ift barrels each. The manager reports' that No. 3 bore flowed very strongly this morning, five barrels being obtained, and powerful pressure of gas. No. 2 bore is also flowing freely, with; much gas.
