FARMERS IN CONFERENCE.
THE FREEHOLD. COMPULSORY MILITARY SERVICE. (By TelecraDh—Press Association.) Invcrcarglll, May 27. At a conference of the Southland branch of the Farmers' Union the following were among tho remits adopted:— "That, in view of tho statement of the Prime Minister that a Land Bill containing the same principles as that introduced last session and withdrawn will bo again introduced, the conference places on record that no legislation will bo satisfactory to the Farmers'. Onion which does not contain tho right of all tenants of tho Crown'to tho freehold option; "That under the compulsory military service some system of payment of the men serving should be mado from the public purse, as it would be unfair for employers to pay wages; "That a farmer borrowing money from the Advances to Settlers Office should bo at liberty to effect fire insurance in any sound office he chooses: "That a strong protest bo made against the system compelling sixth standard pupils of country schools- to attend tho centres for examination."
