ATLANTIC.

Tho Federal Government has decided to olfer a subsidy of£2ooo a year for three years for a cable service from abroad that will supply a minimum of one thousand words daily, limited to existing associations. The conditions are not all defined, but generally they will be on tho lines of the suggestions made in the report presented last session by the Senate's committee on the press cable service. The service must be available to all newspapers that comply with the conditions. The control of the service will bo left to the newspapers interested, every paper taking tho servioe to have a voice in tho management. It is provided that messages up to one thousand words per' day must he transmitted by the Paoifio cable, but no stipulation is made as to route beyond that number.

Tho Postmaster-General, Mr. J. Thomas, 'will settle the conditions under which tho service shall be supplied to newspapers, but not tho terms.

The Federal Government has instructed the High Commissioner ito support in every possible way the construction of a State-owned Atlantic cablfe.
