The Pnlmerston Literary and Dc«atin B Society held its .weekly meeting last evening, when there was a large attonilanco of members, including a number of ladies. After a vigorous and interesting discussion, a vote was talcon, and thp question was decided in tho nega•Xive. At a meeting last evening, tho , commits tee, which bus hail on hand the movement for raising funds to build an Old linn's Home in l'allnerstpn, decided to hold a conceit on .Tune 22, in aid of the funds of tho JJistrict Nurso Society. The Chamber of Commerce has been ondcavouriuK . for some time to induce the Postal 'Department Id accept parcels up to. 0 p.m., this division at present olosing at 3 p.m. The secretary of the chamber has now received intimation that the post office will concede' the request, and parcels can now bo posled ncross t'lin counter up till G p.m. Nothing was apparent, yesterday to indicate to the ordinary observer that it was Empire Day. The public schools, hovrcvor, assembled in tlicii , grounds and saluted the ilng, the National Anthem also being sung. For some time pa.st the Kairanga County Council has betm endeavouring to induce tho Railway Popartinent to improve a very dangerous crossing at Longburn, the view of approaching trains being completely blocked out by trees, At yesterday's mooting' of .the council, a letter was read from tho Department, to the dFcct that an effort would be made to induco the neighbouring property-owners to_ cut down tho trees, and thus minimise the danger. Tho syllabus drawn up by tbo committee for the ensuing three months was adopted, and the nomination of officers was taken. There aro eleven nominations for ritual competition for a gold medal presented by I3ro. .Taelc. Palmerston, Slay 2G. A IVnss Association mossag'o to tho effect that tlio Roy. \V. Soorgio, of Dnnodin, had declined a unanimous, call from tho congregation of St. Andrew's Presbyterian iChurob, Palniorston, is incorrect. No call has yet been, made by tho church. The Palmorston Rifles held a successful "sotiial" at tho Oddfellows' Hall last evening, between fifty and sixty couples boing present. Puring tho evening vocal items woro contributed by Messrs. Hudson, JM'Ferran, and Mabima, and Tingler J)ilks, Private •Secton was M.Cj. A man named' Leith was admitted to the Pnlmerston Hospital yesterday, having had his locs crushed while bushfelling. Tliero was a large attendance at thn ouclire tournament at Fitzherbert East on Tuesday night, including a number of visitors from Palmerston. Tho first prizes were won by Mjss Gavith and Mr. Phillips, Tho hall "was subsequently clnarod, and a very enjoyable danoo held, over thirty couple's being present. The music was supplied by Miss Jl'Konsiio, assisted by Mr. Ben. Enuka and Mr. Jonslci. Mr. H. R. Lancaster was M.C. During tho evening songs were contributed by Mies Koarne and Mr. Eniiku.
