EDUCATION GRANTS.
4 _ ONE WAY OF GETTING THEM. (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) i Napier, May 20. Ab tho Hawke's Bay Education Board meeting this afternoon the grants from the Department for various schools were received. One of them amounted to £1150 for Milltown School, near Gisborne. Mr. G. E. Darton (a Gisborne member) said: "I am very pleased to see this very necessary grant made, but it is interesting to note that, although this board has continually recommen- ' (led tho Department to make a grant for the new school at Milltown, all such applications invariably ' have been declined. It is only when outside influence has been brought to bear on the Minister that ho has seen his way to make the grant. Tho conditions liavo not altered in tho slightest degree ■ since this board made its first application, and, it is quite evident to me that it is useless for the board to make recommendation to tho Department unless it is also prepared to pull tho , proper strings, and bring political influence to bear on tho authorities." , It was decided to decline a. grant of , £200 for the Kaiteratahi school near , Gisborne, as it was considered insufficient. A voice: Who is tho member for the ■ district? (Laughter.) I The other grants' wero accepted, and , tho works will bo proceeded with. i ' ———
