iFroja Our floeclal OorresnondeaU Palmerslnn North, May 23. The Palmerston branch of the Navy League hold its annual meeting on Saturday evening, at the residence of Captain. Hewitt, president, who occupied the chair. The lion, secretary, Mr. F. S. Goldingham, read the report and balance-sheet. The former showed that excellent, work had been done during the year, a lecture by Mr. C. W. Palmer especially arousing interest in the work of the'league. The following officers were elected President, Captain Hewitt, R.N.; hon. sec., Sir. A. V. Burnard; committee, Messrs. D. Buick, M.P., J. A. Nash, J. L. Barnicoat, J. Bell, F. S. Goldingham, S. R. Eelf, and Dr. Martin. It was decided to form the local branch into n sub-branch of Wellington. It is proposed to hold a conversazione shortly. The firebells rang an alarm about 8 o'clock last night, but tho alarm proved to be a false one. The playing of the Palmerston Brass Band in the Square yesterday afternoon attracted a large number of people, who thoroughly enjoyed the music. Messrs. Sollitt Bros, have donated a guinea to tho Fire Brigade Fund in recognition of the good workdono by the brigade at a recent fire ou ' their premises. Mr. F. J. Tasker, hon. secretary of the Palmerston Beautifying Society, has received a letter from tho Hon. T. Mackenzie, Minister for Scenery and Forestry, thanking the society for their courtesy, and intimating that anything lie is able to do ill assisting the preservation of the beauty spots afforded him great pleasure. The letter was apropos of tho reservation of Mount Wharite. A concert is to bo held about the middle of June in aid of St. John Ambulance District Nursing Fund. Tho No-License League open a campaign hero on May 30.
