TRAINING AT WANGANUI. (By Telecranh—Press Association.) Wanganui, May 21. The weather continues fine for trau> ing operations. A large number of visiting horses arrived yesterday, including Waitapu, Pharos, Golden Loop, Compass, Patrobus, Merry Lawn, Waikaraka, Wimmera, Maori King, and Bridge. Some good work was done this morning. Boanerges had the better of St. Bill over six furlongs, run in lmin. 18sec., Nyland taking lmin. 20sec. for the same distance. St. Felix covered half a mile in 54sec. . Playmate did t\w rounds on the plough, and Yoca, Overtime, and First Consul five furlongs in lmin. 44scc., the first-named having slightly the best" of the go. Stourton occupied lmin. 6sec. Compass and Merry Lawn .jumped five hurdles fairly well. Millpond (Telford) and Aorangi (Williams) cleared six hurdles splendidly. Research and John hopped off at the mile post, Patrobus joining in at six furlongs and The Lark at half a mile. John galloped well, and finished in front, Research being beaten off. John's time was lmin. oOsec. Continuance Paisano, and Pearl Reef were associated in a couple of rounds over schooling hurdles, tlie first-named pair giving a capital exhibition of jumping. Pearl Reef shaped indifferently. Lovell went once round over the fences, clearing the obstacles remarkably well. NOTES AND COMMENTS. [By GlencoeJ The Takapuna Jockey Club's meeting will be concluded to-morrow. There will also be racing to-morrow at Oaniaru aud W=Bganui. Principal events to be decided at the last-named fixture are the Wsaginiui Steeplechase, Century Hurdles, an 4 Connolly Handicap. Up to May 13 the Accident Fund fee of £1 had been paid for 1873 horses. M. Ryan, who rode Sea Elf to victor)' in the Empire Handicap at the Takapuna meeting on Saturday, won the same event on Scotty in 1904. J. Begbie, who served his time with R. J. Mason, has taken service under P. M'Grath, and will do the riding (when the weights permit) for this stable. Pas Soul, half-sister to Boanerges, has again gone amiss at Riccarton, and it is unlikely that tho daughter of Soult and Parera will be further persevered with. Though it has appeared in several papers that J. Paramore is to ride tho Hastings-owned Jackpot in the Wanganui Steeplechase, • it is understood that the crack Auckland rider, A. Julian, is to steer Mr. Ellingham's horse. Tho owner of Royal Marine has not made known his intentions so far as to which race his horse will start in at
tho Wanganui meeting, which opens tomorrow, oiid probably he will wait till he sees the state of the track. If it is on the heavy side, the chestnut will probably start in the open sis furlongs, but if the going is good he will be sent out in the Purua Hack Race. Trainer D. Nyhan did not go to Wanganui with tho horse, but went south on Saturday night in charge of the trotter Dick G., whom ho will drive at tho Plumpton meeting to-morrow.
As H. Telford is to ride Continuance in the Century Hurdles at Wanganui, it would look as if the Porirua stable will bo without a representative in that race. Another deduction that can safely be made is that the Gisborne stable, which shelters both Paisano and Continuance, is evidently of tho opinion that the last-named horse is the best at the weights. This is also borne out by the state of the betting market-
After his good showing over the big fences on Saturday morning Lovell is now in strong demand for the Wanganui Steeples. The Huntsman gelding is sure of solid support inasmuch as he is tho representative of a very powerful stable, albeit it should be remembered that at the present time tho Porirua stable contains several crippled jumpers, and Exmoor, Waione, and Tauira are all laid aside with different ailments.
The St. Ambrose colt St. Bees, whichi -Mr. AY. Bevan purchased from "Mr. A. Barclay" on the latter's retirement from racing, is now running out on his owner's farm at Ohau. The black colt was growing very fast and his trainer advised that he bo spelled during the winter.
The well-blown Hawera sportsman Mr. H. Spratt, owner of Mendip, was a visitor to Wellington during the week. He is very confident that the St. Paul gelding will run prominently in the Connolly Handicap at Wanganui, as he is now quite rid of the lameness which affected him after the Awapuni fixture.
_ Tile fact. that has been consistently schooled over big country at Hastings has caused the Birkenhead golding to ease considerably in the market for the Century Hurdles and at the present time it looks as if Continuance and Aorangi will start favourites. _ The way the latter beat Goldbird in a schooling gallop, coupled with the knowledge that Golabird has never been two miles over fences, has also caused the Loveshot gelding to recede in the market.
Immediately on the conclusion of the AVangarmi meeting the Hutt' trainer, G. Delaney, will leave for Sydney where he will superintend the preparation of Tilson.
sale of the Otaki Maori Racing Club s privileges resulted: Outside gates, £115, Mr. J. Cameron (Lejin), outside publican's booth, £19, Mr. J. Johnson (Otaki); inside ditto., £37 10s., Mrs. Higgins (Wcreroa); fruit stall, £8, Mr. Wilson (Petone); horse paddock, 10s., Mr. Head (Otaki).
Sea Elf, who won the Empire Handicap at the Takapuna meeting on Saturday, is a three-year-old by Seat-on Delaval from St.. Evelyn. Sho only once got on the winning list as a two-year-old and in her first few efforts this season she was rather unfortunate 1? I *5 plaoed second more often than first. At the Auckland Racing Club's autumn meeting, however, she made amends for previous defeats by annexing thp Great Northern Oaks. At first sight, Soa Elf does not impress one as being high-class, but she is bred well enough to win any race in the Dominion, and her trainer, F. Macmanemin, avers that sho is" 1 as courageous a littlo filly as ever he has hadl in his stable. It seems probable, therefore, that the Seaton Delaval filly will be entered for most of the big handicaps next season.
