(Before Mr. V/. G. Riddell, S.Jl.j A CHALLENGE TO FIGHT. A big raw-boned man named Owen HiP'koy pleaded guilty (1) to disorderly behaviour in Cuba Street-, whilst drunk, and (2) having wilfully damaged a pair of trousers, valued at 235., tho property of Constable Shaw. Sub-inspector Norwood 1 stated that accused came out of the Imperial Hotel on Friday evening and challenged all and sundry to light. Coustablo Shaw cautioned him that lie was courting trouble, and some of accused's friends alsp tried to get him away, but he persisted in liis broad challer.go and subsequently threatened to throw the constable. Constable Shaw arrested tho man and in the strngglo tho officer's trousers wero damaged. On tho first charge accused was convicted and fined '10s., in default 14 days' imprisonment, and on tho second charge ho was convicted and ordered to pay for tho damage dono to tho trousers, in default I*l days' imprisonment. I have been working" indignantly declaimed a middle-aged woman named Eliza Southee, alias Booth, alias Tall, charged with being a rogue and vagabond in that she had boon previously convicted in October, 1907, of being. an idle and disorderly person having insufficient .lawful moans of support. "1 don't want a solicitor," said accused when his Worship asked her if sho wanted to engage counsel. "I want you to dofend me." Sub-Inspector Norwood informed the Court thac there were 3S previous convictions against accused., including 14 on charges'of vagrancy. Accused was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called on, on condition that sho goes into the Salvation Army Home and remains there for a period of six months. OTHER CASES. . Alfred Dethloff was convicted and discharged on a charge of insobriety and was convicted and fined £5 in default 21 days' imprisonment for having used obsceno language in Manners Street. i John Phillips, charged with insobriety, was convicted and fined 10s., with the alternative of 24 hours' imprisonment. Samuel Cameron, also ■ charged with insobriety, pleaded guilty and wa3 remanded until May 28 for medical treatment. One first offender was fined 10s., and threo others wore convicted and discharged.
