AN INTERESTING LINK WITH THE PAST. By Telotr»p6—Prem association—OoDrrlsht London, May 19. ■ Obituary: Admiral Sir Wβ.. Garnhara Luard, K.C.8., aged 90, who entered the Navy in 1835, in the days of the "wooden walls." His death was the result of a carriage accident.
"GRAND OLD MAN OF THE NAVY." Admiral Sir William Garnham Luard, K.C.8., tho Grand Old Man of the Navy, and one of the most. respected personalities in the county of Essex, celebrated his ninetieth birthday quietly on April 7 last at AVitlmtu Lodge, his residence, near Witham. "Long Jerry," as his men affectionately called him when he was commander of tho Indefatigablo in the 'fifties, iirst wont to sea at the age of fifteen, when he joined H.AI.S. Aetiicon, and lie has witnessed during his long career the transition ■from the "wooden walls" of Nelson's time to the great floating forts of steel which afo the battleships of to-day. Deceased was at the Royal Naval College from 183 ato 1835. In 1852 he was gazetted for services at the capture of Rangoon and Kcmmeudine (China and Burmese, medals, with clasp). In 1864 he was captain of H.M.S. Conqueror at the storming of tho Simono-Seki batteries, being niado C.8.. and receiving the decoration of the Legion of Honour.
The posts he had filled include: ViceChairrnan of Ordnance Committee, Superintendent of. Shcerness dockyard and of Malta dockyard, and President of tho Royal Naval College. Hβ was also chairman of several Admiralty Committees.
