FARAIERS' UNION.

TARANAKI provincial CONFERENCE. Tho annual Taranaki Provincial Conference of the Farmers' Union was held yesterday (telegraphs the Press' Association). After passing a resolution of sorrow at the death of King Edward, the conference adjourned till the afternoon. Tho annual report showed an improvement in the position of the union in Taranaki. Three, new branches wore started during the year, and four resuscitated. In some parts of the province, where there was room for branches, there was' not sufficient support to justify- their formation. The influence of the union had made itself felt in various .questions. In reference to the growth of the union and its increased activity, particularly in tho Auckland and Wellington provinces, was noted, and the hope was expressed that.. Taranaki would continue to do \ its, share in extending the scope aftd influence of the 'union. Mr. J. W. Jones was re-elected president, and Mr. K Maxwell representative at the Dominion conference. Remits were agreed to urging tho withdrawal • > Condition- in grants '.for roads and bridges, that tho expenses of engineering and supervision bo charged against- the local body; that, persons borrowing from the State bo allowed to insuro their building in any reputable fire office; that milk-testing associations be initiated on the lines of tho Dalefield Association; that any further attempt to impose' further unfair taxation on land he resisted; that tho present 'systejn" of valuing land for taxation be altered in favour of annual value taxation; that the Agricultural Department issue a., monthly journal; that agricultural statistics bo collected through the.post; that noxious weeds be cut earlier and the Act more stringently enforced^..
