FEILDING. Mr. R. P. AValsli, of Feilding, has just received word of the death of his brother, Mr. Gordon Walsh, at Oxford, England. Deceased was ouo of six brothers who were in the legal profession. It was Mr. Gordon Walsh'a intention to pay a visit to .Feilding, but death has intervened. 3lr. J. Cummings, who has held the office of conductor of the Feilding Band for some months, lias resigned the position, and has gone to New Plymouth, where he has been appointed conductor of the local brass band. PARAPAKAUMU. • The third annual ball of tho local tennis club, which is one of tho social events of the year, which was to have taken place on May 20, has been postponed until after tho obsequies of tho late King Edward. Iho local rifle club has scored a record, having put up an average of 91 at the late test match fired against iSgatiaua, which club they decisively beat by 34 points, C. Dowsett topping the list by the fine score of 98. There is some talk of starting a fruitcanning industry here, and this should prove a succcss, as tho district is noted for its fine supply of fruit, this, of course, being duo to tho remarkably, mild climate. SHANNON. All business places in Shannon will be closed on Friday. There was an attendance of about 80 at tho Literary and Debating Society's "Social" on Tuesday eveningj in the Druids'. Hall. Mesdames Pearoe, Saunders, and Langalen contributed recitations. Mr. Saunders and Miss Lavnvig sang a duet, and Miss Asquith and Messrs. Galland, Bond, and Saunders .also sang. Mr. Hook played a, violin solo. In tho art drawing competition Miss Gardner ajid Mr. Larigalen. won the prizes offered. Othei gamo3 were evntered into with zest, and tho ladies provided refreshments. CARTERTON. In connection with the observance of Friday next as a day.of national monrn-. ing, arrangements aro almost oompleto for tho memorial service, which is to be held in the afternoon on the showgrounds of the Wairarajm and Kast Coast Pastoral and Agricultural Society. The grounds have generously been placed at the disposal of the citizens' committee for the purpose. The clrarcli choirs are combining, and, with the addition of a number of musicians who have volunteered their services, will be about 150 strong. The friendly societies and territorials will be represented, and invitations have specially been sent to the heads of public bodies to be present. A sub-committee has boon appointed to arrange for draping the grandstands, and the executive have appointed a marshal. These.duties will be carried out by Mr. H. S. Moss, who will be assisted by members of committee. A special programme has also been printed.
Mr. Heald, our stationmaster, is at present'- 011 his annual holiday leave, which ho is spending in northern difr tricts.'
A rather sharp frost was experienced in Carterton on Wednesday morning, hut its keenness did not. prevent, many from rising early to see the comet. Steady progress is being mado with the erection of Callister's brick building in High Street, and it will not b« Jong now before the building will be completed. It is a one-floor, building, and in addition to a commodious shop, will contain offices. It is a decided improvement upon the structure which it is replacing, and a- handsome nddition to the town.
The meeting of the general committee of the Wairarapa and East Coast Pastoral and Agricultural Society, which was-to have been held on Friday, has been postponed for a week. The committee, on behalf of the society, have forwarded to the Prime Minister a resolution of condolence in connection with tho death of King Edward. Tho local bowling green is to be formally closed on Thursday afternoon next week, when the members are to be grouped and photographed. On Thursday evening an address on "The Objects and Constitution of tho Laymen's Home Mission Union" is tc be given in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Schoolroom by -Mr. Jl G. W. Ait-ken, of Wellington. An alarm was sounded 011 the locs] firebell 011 Wednesday, the cause being an outbreak ill the residence of Mr. Varies. in Kent Street. The brigade answered tho call promptly, but Mrs. Oav-ics. however, liad managed to suppress the flames before their arrival. She .sustained some painful burns extingiushing the flames.
