An extensive fire occurred here or Monday night, when a block of buildings at the corner of Nathan's Terracs was burnt down. Most of tho furnituw and stock was saved. The following buildings were gutted, tho insurances be" ing given in parentheses:—Two shop. l (.£120); auction mart (,£SO), 1 stock (.6100) billiard saloon (,£100); Mr. Stanish's fisl shop (,£200). All these buildings were inshred in tho National Fire, and were owned bv Mr. Reuben Hutchison, Hawke's Bay, for whom Mr. J. J}.. Stansoil was agent. Mr. A. Montenth had .£35 insurance in the Norwich TJnfon on the fittings of his billiard room. The boarding-house, occupied by Mrs. Burnett, and owned by Mrs. Hall, was destroyed, on which the insurance is said to lie .£l5O. A house belonging to Mrs, King, insured in the Now Zealand office,' was also damaged. Tho fire, which seems to have originated in, or near, the billiard saloon, was discovered by Mr. S. Bobicli. storted about 10.15* p.m. Ali the buildings were of white pine, except Mr. Stanseli's auction mart, wliich was of l'imu. A bucket brigade did useful work, and undoubtedly saved some of the adjoining dwelling-houses. It is to be hoped that residents will organise some . kind of fire brigede, as in such an occurrence as that of Monday night, the assistance rendered is purely voluntary, and necessarily more or less of a haphazard nature*
